Filial Law Saw Kids have to Pay for their Parents Medical Bills

Shared it on my facebook page. I'm glad Illinois and Michigan are not on the list yet.

Massachusetts is on the list , I sure hope my daugther will not have to pay for me. This a horrible idea, what if child can't afford to care for their parents ,or they're fighting in a war and their parent get sick ? Do you just let a person get sicker and dies??

I'm glad that Alabama, Florida and Texas are not on list, but disappointed about California on list.

Personally, I would never leave my children debts to pay. Very wrong in my opinion....I remain debt-free and will stay that way...and if there are any debts owed if I should pass unexpectedly...then my estate or personal finances will take care of it.

I do know it's hard for some people not to ask their children for help!....Sometimes it cannot be avoided....but feel that we, as mature adults should not leave our children debt-ridden. And I have never-ever asked my children for anything, especially $$ or to pay my Medical bills.

This is not about parents asking for help from their kids, the Filial law tell a person they have to care or pay for their parents . I found one site that said if a person can't afford to pay the state will not made them pay.

I heard of one elderly gentleman here in Jacksonville...who had to go into a Nursing Home and they took his whole Social Security check, minus $30 (for himself) each month....

Nursing Homes are expensive, but some do accept patients on their ability to pay.

Do you know if that elderly person has food served for him or does he have to use that $30 for utilities, food, etc?

The $30 dollars are for his own personal use....he is a friends father....and he shares a room with another patient....Seems he is destitute except for Social Security. KInd of sad....

Good nursing homes cost a lot of .... even Assisted Facilities too....

If you use medicare or medicaid to pay for your nursing home, they take your house. My grandparents just went through this. First my Grandma had to go, she has alzheimers, but my Grandpa stayed to stay in the house as long as he could and was driving back and forth everyday to stay with her, but he has Parkinson's. He finally gave it up and is in the home with her now.

Now that I'm thinking about it, that's how they got the house. They bought it really cheap from one of their relatives, like an aunt or something when she went into a nursing home.

If a parent insurance get capped off , meaning there is nothing left the parent's adult child will have to have their parent live with them. I know of case like this that has happen. I think it is a horrible law as the parent could be a real abused person and they still be send to live at their kid house.

That is sad... I did not have to experience this with both of my parents. This law is wrong. It's those greedy bastards who can't take a whipping when a loss happens. This is PRIME "moral hazard" at work here.

Hubby and I have long-term care insurance.

My elderly neighbor became a widow three weeks ago. She is selling her house and moving to Massachusetts, to be near family. She's been checking into assisted living apartments. For a 500 sq. ft. one-bedroom apt., it will cost $6,000/month. It looks like she will have to downsize even further to a smaller place, and not get the assisted living care but get the independent living instead. It will be quite a change from about 2,200 sq. ft. house.

I guess living with a family is out of option?

She wants to maintain her independence for as long as possible. Also, she wants a residence that includes fellowship with others and activities. She doesn't want to become a cat lady sitting home alone.

She has a step-son in AZ, a step-daughter and three step-granddaughters in MA.

I hope I can remain as independent as I can when I move to New Mexico. I will be living in an apartment hoping to have reasonable rent. It would have to be in Albuquerque, New Mexico. My sister live with her husband in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Now that I look at the Nursing home and that is way too much money for that. This is terrible. I will have to talk with the social security administration about it. It is a shame. :(
