What happened to both my grandmothers when they entered assisted care or the nursing home is that they had to use their assets to pay for the care. Once their assets dropped to almost nothing, then they qualified for assistance for that care.
But all the income they had went to that care. The Social Security check, everything. They were left with only $30 or so a month to spend as they wished.
I can only imagine how that feels to see all your hard-earned assets bleed away into caring for you. To realize that you won't have anything to leave to your children when you pass. Unless, you give a gift to your children, before you go into assisted care. (Which is what both my grandmothers did.)
