FBI : Aliens Exist

It is pretty presumptuous of us to believe that we are the only intelligent life form in the universe.

No, it's realistic. What would be presumptuous would be to assume that intelligence is an inevitable outcome of evolution, considering that among the millions of species on earth, very few have exhibited any forms of higher intelligence.

I have a record album (yes, an old LP) called "Monster Rally and I can't remember who the singers are. There's "Mostly Ghostly" and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" and a bunch of others.

Just "hippie", Kristina! That song stuck in my head when going to bed last night!

Carl Sagan said everything I need to know about this subject in his Cosmos series.

Also, Contact was a great movie concerning this subject. I recommend both.

Too bad Carl Sagan isn't around anymore :(

Who are those few species that exhibits intelligence?

This is perhaps true for some branches of abrahamic religious groups, where they literally belive man was created in the image of God.

Beliving in visiting aliens and abductions is categorized as religious faith by scholars, btw.

Name of image:"Well, the good news is that we found out Jesus is worshiped on other planets.".

An alien is facing a man.

Alien: "Oh, he comes back every two weeks or so. We gave him this big box of chocolates when he first arrived. Why? What'd you guys do?".

Man: "Uhh..."
:hmm: I didn't know visting aliens and abductions is categorized as religious faith.
BTW, I love your alien joke.

I have a book by Sagan but I should look up his Cosmos series.

Can we be absolutely confident that there is nothing out there? Not really because we haven't been able to explore any of the planets outside of the Solar System. There is merely no evidence to support that there is nothing out there because we do not have the technology to assist us in finding the answer to the question. There are around 400 billion stars in our galaxy alone. I have read that the scientists believe there is around 4 trillion planets in the galaxy. In the universe, it's possible that there may be as many as 70 sextillion stars.

It's more than likely that a few of them are inhabitable and have intellect beings.

Genetics controls evolution, not to mention environmental need. If you are expecting dogs to evolve to the point of having the same form of intelligence as humans, you will be waiting some time as genetics places limits on the possibilities.

But, I still think it is presumptuous to believe that we, as earth bound humans, are the only creatures that have evolved to the degree of intelligence we exhibit. Unfortunately, intelligence appears to have created granduer in some.

No, no, I'm not saying there's "nothing out there". Not in the least bit. I would be shocked if there was no other life in the universe.

What I'm saying is that the presumption that "life probably exists" shouldn't be implicitly followed with "if life exists, it's probable that other forms of intelligent life will have arisen somewhere". That, to me, seems extremely anthropogenic - an extension of the assumption that human life was either "inevitable" or the "conclusion" or anything else of the sort as an "end-point" of evolution.

And I forget who asked, but I won't stand by this statement 100%, but to the best of my knowledge, I think humans are the only "intelligent" species. Of course, "intelligent" is a wholly undefined term that's got a lot of connotations that can never be fully defined, so what I really mean (and assume others mean when they talk about "intelligent species") is one that is capable of language and abstract thought.

That could be applied to anything from ants to aspen trees. Just saying. We are simply not "intelligent" enough to get with the rest of this world's life programs.

That's exactly my point. There's no predisposition in genetics or evolution towards intelligence, which is why I think the concept that alien life would have almost certainly evolved intelligence is more showing a limiting factor. It's not "grandeur" to recognize that out of the millions of species, humans have far surpassed all others in terms of intelligence, and while it would presumptuous to say that it won't evolve again, it's certainly not a convergent trait, so it's far from guaranteed, as well.

Um... I'm not sure what it is you're saying here, actually, lol.

Just that creatures in this world of dreams are able to communicate with each other in ways we cannot imagine, so we brush them off as inferior, but when you come right down to it, they are superior. They do not destroy their own environment but communicate with each other to make life sustainable. That is true intelligence. I could go on and on about this, but right now I am too bushed, lol.

Anthropomorphization ahoy!

And like I said, I explicitly defined "intelligence" as I was using it to mean "capable of language and abstract thought". If you think trees and other animals are capable of that... you've probably been watching one too many Disney movies.

Joe resents that remark.

Haha, my girlfriend doesn't like my definition of it either. She likes to think of our three cats (well, maybe just two of them, Silver just likes to poop everywhere that isn't a litter box) as intelligent and capable of understanding her.

Unfortunately, I have to stick with the biologists on the topic.

Just to show you how preposterous some people can be. They are so quick to believe in something without asking for proof, and yet they demand proof for something else. It's just something I found to be interesting.

I just don't think it's that big of a deal about the aliens. They may exist, they may not. Although it's more likely they do exist because they have found living bacteria on Mars in the past. However, we are not talking about 3-eyed Martians that we are accustomed to seeing on TV.

It's interesting how people are so quick to dismiss the possibility that there may be life out there. Why? I don't know.

I bet that it is very popular for the aliens to travel to Mars for their "red beach" vacation. That's how Mars has so many bacteria from the aliens. :hmm:

I'm with you and banjo on this one.

I should note that it has not been proven that aliens came to this earth.
That doesn't mean they haven't been here. Only that there's no good evidence that they have been to Earth.
