Drivers Licenses & Deafness

We have nothing to test one's hearing and boy is it something we should have since there are so many retirees here.

Standard vision & road signs is all, unless it's your first license, then there's a full written test and a driving test. Not sure how they handle the driving test though, do you have a terp with you?

I didn't have an interpreter for my road test. It was fairly easy. All they had to do was point where to go. I passed with flying colors.

Thanks!! Wasn't sure since I haven't had to do that since losing my hearing.

This is interesting. Funny thing is that when you go to MVA (Motor Vehicle Administration), when you talk with a person who work behind the computer to fill out the info and all the employee are trained to follow the strict rules that drivers must have all the information they need before MVA person can complete the process. If you miss one tiny info, they will refuse to submit new or renew the licenses. Now they give you the eye test which is very important rule, if you failed and you don't have glasses, they won't give you new or renew licenses. Right? Now what about deaf person? Deaf person come and signed or write on paper to communicate with MVA person, what MVA person do? Nothing... which means that it's not neccesary to have it on license. It depending on what state you are in, some may ask you if you are deaf or not. Some states (from what I heard) will ask you if you want to put it on the license. Some states follow a strict rules when MVA person noticed that you are deaf and that it require to put it on license or may need to go out and get audi signature and come back to finish up the paper work. So, if you ever go up to MVA place, if they say nothing with rules about you being deaf, don't worry about it. Remember all MVA or MA (Motor Administrations) have very strict rules....

I disagree, you shouldn't need to test someone's hearing for driving, but I think there should be an every 5-10 year renewal actual driving test, to test reaction time and continued knowledge of the rules of the road, since so few people (both old and not) seem to actually remember them from when they were 16.

As for the driving test, I dunno, I was fully hearing when I was 16. But when I had to get a new license when I turned 25, they did some rudimentary hearing test at the same time as the vision test.

Here, my license is for 8 years. I think it's the same for these seniors. Now, what I am speaking about is these 80-90 men and women who can't sit high enough to see out the window that when they are in the grocery store all you can hear (my kids and mother anyway) is "Hey! Ethel!! Where are you?" "Oy, Herman, I'm ova heah by da chickens." And this is at the top of their lungs. It takes the employees getting to them and leading 'Herman' to 'Ethel' and asking them to not holler across the store please. We also have them yelling to each other in the check-out line when they are right next to each other. The couple was asked by a Florida Hwy Patrol officer in line who was driving, they said they both had their licenses, but wasn't sure who was going to drive home. This was all while yelling since they both have hearing loss but no hearing aids. Needless to say, the officer followed them home to make sure they got there.

I just had a funny dream that OP talked about bringing interpreter for driving test... It would be a great interpreter hood ornament.. having interpreter sit on top of the hood terping whatever evaluator says....while deaf driving and watching ther terp signed.

I looked it up for Florida and there IS a hearing test - but ONLY for a "Certified Drivers License" (CDL). I assume that is for a driver of a smaller commercial vehicle?

CDL's are trucker licenses... so being able to drive a big semi or something similar... most states also require this for bus drivers, really here in CO its anything over a 15 passenger.

DEAF PEOPLE CAN DRIVE?!?!

Just kidding. In California we just tell the officer we're Deaf.

I made this attachment at work about a year ago for a client who had problems with an officer who pulled him over. You can use it too.
