CIs are bad from a certain perspective.
CIs are bad from a certain perspective.
in what way?
Forced implanting.
I assume you mean on children, but won't get into that debate.
Destroying residual hearing. It is something each person knows can happen before surgery and doesn't always happen. What good is residual hearing if the ha is at max and there is more feedback than normal sound? Or what you hear sounds terrible and distorted?
Damage to cochlear nerve. Only if the surgeon is unskilled, I would imagine, although it is true mistakes do occur, but that could be said for any surgery.
Higher risks of meningitis. Once the decision to have the CI is made, the meningitis vaccine is recommended and in my case, insisted upon before surgery.

90 people out of 60,000. Yes, it is a a risk but an informed one.

Perhaps this is one reason parents opt to have their children implanted? I don't really like getting into that debate as there are obviously many sides and beliefs to that issue. As for cochlear damage, it is not the nerve, it is the hairs in the cochlea from what I have been told. The nerve is what makes the implant work, as the electrical signals are sent to it and from there to the brain.
I could be wrong, and it won't be the first time, but all I know is I can hear now better than I have in two years. And it is getting better every day.
I suppose I could go on and find more links, then you could do the same. How about if we just agree to disagree? After all, that is what the whole CI debate comes down to: your own personal beliefs.
Thanks Lisa!
