That I was raised with oral and english signs? I didn't know about ASL until I was at IL school for the deaf. I read lips and speak very well. Also the reason that I want CI.. because I want to hear more things and to be able to hear my kids' voice especially when they say ILY Mom to me. I use oral most of the time with my mom since she doesn't sign much plus the rest of my and in laws family. Jeremy and I do sign and talk at the same time.

Sorry, I just had to vent!

It doesn't make you bad at all - it makes you human :) Don't let some people get to you- YOU are the only one who'se opinion counts when its your own life, happiness and destiny. Don't let anybody sway you from your dream :)

A tweak here and a tweak there, why, you'd be a Saint! Lol! Giddy today, aren't I....

Your parents' decisions are never your fault.

I don't mind that you want a CI for yourself, either. That should be your decision.

There is ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with your position! I think you're only trying to better yourself, and for that, I commend you!

It really saddens me when I see certain ones putting down those of you who want or got, a CI. I really don't understand why there's all this seperatism amongst deafies. Don't people realize that we're talking personal choice here?

If certain deafies are happy signing and not using a hearing device, wonderful! If others are happy using a hearing device and signing, wonderful! If still others are happy being oral and lip reading, while using a CI OR NOT, wonderful! It's all about what makes that person comfortable, and no one else has the right to infringe about that person's choice!

I applaud you, Felix! Hold your head up high, and do what is right for you! If anyone else has a problem with you because of your impending implantation, oh well, it's THEIR LOSS, NOT YOURS!

Good luck to you!

Thank you! I'm hearing, btw... I just don't understand why some people are so threatened by technology. I don't want to offend anyone here by saying this, but I don't believe a deafie is ruining his or her culture, simply because, they choose to be oral or choose to get a CI. You are still deaf regardless of the fact that you have or want a CI. Take off the processor, and guess what happens?! You can't hear a lick, can you?

I really wish somone can help me understand why there's all the seperatism amongst deaf people, because, I just don't get it. You are all people. You just happened to have chosen different paths for yourselves.

YOu might want to count yourself lucky. You learned to speak and write well, and then you learned ASL. That's great.
From my understanding, the other way around is even more difficult.

YOu're doing great. Just look at the people around you that you communicate with.
Don't get upset by something that someone tells you who doesn't know you, doesn't see you and is probably 1000 miles away.

No.. it is not making you bad.... You are onlya human...It was your choice to have CI... it was your decision.. You are old enough,,

Yeah, alot of people thought that I am hearing because of the way I was typing and writing. English is my passion in school. So that's why I learned how to write very well. Someday I will get more English classes in college so I could write a book or something else like that! :)

Yeah I know what you mean... I was HOH until age of 35 ....
Started wearing two HAs until 5 yrs ago,,, I am deaf.., I do have few CI'er friends... I have nothing against CI as long as they made their own choice,,, I only am against CI on babies and toddlers,,, thats all.. I rather for the parents to wait unil their child is old enough to make their choice..

Thanks!!

Your parents' decisions are never your fault.
Exactly, that's why parents shouldn't be extremely devoted to a particualr metholdology. Parents have to undy that it's OK to start out with one particular methodology, but they shouldn't be extremely black and white about following it. A parent's job should be to help their dhh kids fill up their toolbox with a varity of tools. That way, kids will never have to ask their parents why they didn't learn Sign or speech or whatever!!!!
OB, the division isn't TOO bad. Things have gotten a lot better......the CI is becoming more accepted every day!

I KNOW that. But, SOME people on here, don't! That's why I made the comments that I did.

I have to agree with you 100% :)

you are not bad felix you are TOO GOOD lol

i use signs and voice same time you not alone i am same but i am not oral i use sign lauguage all my life but i use voice too
i use voice first before i learn to sign my parents didn't know i was deaf until i was 3
i "fooled" them cuz i use my voice

Don't worry Felix, that is who you are and don't let anybody intimidate you into being who you don't want to be.

No, it doesn't make you a bad person for being raised oral. I was also raised oral and I never knew how to sign until I was 14 years old. Does that make me a bad person? No, it doesn't.
It is really your decision to get a CI for yourself if you want it.

I agree with you. Its a persons choice. I dont think that anybody should make that decision for them.

Im hoh and learned ASL in college. I remember 20 years ago, a deaf woman came up to me and explained that she is doing a survey project for her class. Her survey subject was "how many deafies will accept CI or not accept it."
I told her that I dont want CI to answer her questions and asked her how many deafies want CI?? She told me that just about all the deafies from birth dont want CI and those who were hearies first and become deaf later in life all wanted CI. Thought it was interesting that those who had been hearing before become deaf all wanted CI becuz they missed hearing sounds such as music, etc. But all deafies from birth never heard sounds or very little so it wasnt that important in their lives. :)

Ever heard of the "crab theory"? There is a bucket of crabs and they are all sitting at the bottom of the bucket. One crab started climbing to the top and other crabs used their claws to pull him/her back down to their level. Now you can imagine a deafie climbing to the top and others are pulling him/her down out of jealousy, hate, etc...get the picture... :)
