State Tax Rates on Cigarettes

Very good topic, Liebling

Unfortunately foods and fruits/veggies are very expensive - why cant they just reduce their prices so that more people, especially low-income population, can afford it? For me, I enjoy driving out to local farms and pick them out on my own but not many people can afford going out of city to do these kind of pickings.

I think that the best way to reduce obesity is to reduce the prices on healthy foods - if I wanted to buy fresh veggies or fruits, they cost more than these frozen fruits/veggies or even a box of Twinkies! I do not know about UK but USA do not generally support farmers. They keep importing fruits and vegetables from other countries, especially Chile in this town where I live at. Wouldnt it be more cost-efficient if the stores buy fruits/veggies from local farmers than having them shipped out here from Chile?

Also another way to reduce obesity is to bring back physical education in public schools! More and more schools are cutting back on PE classes and even some sports.

I don't think taxing junk food is the only way to treat this serious problem - there are many other ways as well - exercise is the key but we see so much emphasis on videogames. This situation is so much more than just eating bad fats - where is public health programs (to teach children value of eating healthy and exercising), school physical education programs, cheaper healthy foods and media awareness that the youth are spending too much time on the computers or video games??? Why is the government focusing so much on taxing as if they think it makes a great short term goal, not investing into long term solutions?

Bottom line - You cant punish a man for buying a box of Twinkie if he was never taught the value of healthy foods & lifestyle in his youth in the first place!!!

Well, taxes on booze don't prevent alcoholics, and taxes on tobacco don't prevent smokers. If people want something, they'll pay the price.

Right - they will cut back on other expenses in order to keep drinking or smoking.

...I think that the best way to reduce obesity is to reduce the prices on healthy foods...
That would probably require federal subsidies, which also require taxes. IF (big "if") the government increased the tax on "junk" food, then that revenue could be used to subsidize the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Some (not all) fresh produce is imported because Americans want year-round fresh produce. We don't want to wait for the right season to get local fruits and vegetables.

Amen! Too many schools are afraid of injury liabilities, or they use the phys-ed time block to teach government mandated (politically influenced) courses.

Yep.

Sadly too, parents are afraid to let their kids walk or ride bikes to school, or play outside in their neighborhoods. Kids used to stay outside until dark, and parents didn't worry. That's not true now. :(

Personally, I've seen the dangers of smoking and obesity, I've got family who are obese, and they have health problem. I'm a former smoker and the daughter of smokers. I've seen the health problems smoking can cause.

I firmly feel that the prices on healthy food need to reduce. I think it's shame ful that a package of twinkies is cheaper than a pound of grapes. that's shameful here in the US. Personally, i don't buy junk food.

Frozen fruits and veggies are just as good as fresh. it's basically flash frozen at the peak of ripeness. so it's just as good. I'll find the link later and post it. Just for those who think Frozen is not as good as fresh, I can understand that, but Just want to let you know what I've read.

Oh, that's odd because our high school require PE for high school credit, only for one year but some students have choose to take PE again for electives.

If people want to stopping the smoking and junk food then need removes all cigarette packs from store and remove all junk food then replace into low fat, fat free or sugar free snacks, like cookie, ice cream, potato chip, candies to make more healthly, even rid of soda then replace into diet soda with no sugar and meats like pork and beef need to remove or use special to remove or reduce the fats. Frozen meal with high fats need to remove too then problem would be solved.

Also, oil like vegetable, canola, peanut and others to need be remove too, or replace into new oil that don't produce more fats but taste would be different.
