Are you Deaf or HOH, were you born this way or what was the reason? How old were you when it happened, was it sudden or happen over time? Tell me are you like me.

I was born hearing, but lost my hearing at 15 months old due to Rubella, a form of German Measles that my Mom had before I was born, and I contracted it 14 hours after I was born, and had to be airlifted to Springfield, IL, where I stayed almost 2 weeks, and was discharged. They say I almost died, and had I done so, I wouldn't be here today.
 
im actually hearing now. But I was born deaf. I just had some stuff in ym ear, mostly cartilage I think, had surgery and now I am hearing.

So what would happen if you died? :laugh2:

As for me, the cause is unknown but seeing as how loud and annoying my mom can be I probably got sick of it and ruined my ears while still in her.

Let's not go there, okay? I'm still alive, and would like to stay that way.
 
The ENT tells me it was the lack of tubes in my ears and damage over time. Medications and a few other things. It happened slowly and over time. I am 42 and will be getting hearing aids for the first time.
 
Nerve damage. I was probably deaf before I was born. I also had cerebral palsy.
 
Been so long ago...small town/time doctor...blind in one eye...practically butchered/blotched the surgery on both ears....damaged/destroyed the nerves. The surgery was supposed to have been for the ear infection(s)...Not a pleasant thing to talk about.
 
Won the genetic lottery! Quite a few deaf people in my family.
 
I have otosclerosis and cochlear otosclerosis, also a genetic lottery winner oh joy. I was 20 when I started losing it my my left ear and 25 or 26 when I started losing it my right. It's progressive loss, pretty much gone now. Profound to no response in my left and profound in my right. Mixed loss bone conduction and sensorineural, which is why a stapedectomy or baha wouldn't work for me.

My loss is mixed also, and I have BAHA's.my left ear had an acoustic neuroma that was ignored by foster parents for years. The symptoms were blame on attention seeking. My right ear was from a combo of my mother damaging by slaps and cleaning ear with paper clips. Dr.s gave up trying to repair drum and the I developed a Cholesteatoma
 
I'm deaf in one ear and have mild sloping to severe loss in my left. I grew up thinking I was just born this way or I lost some hearing when I fell off a chair and hit my head as a small child. I was finally diagnosed last year (I'm 34) with Enlarged Vestibular Aqueducts (EVAS).

It seems to be something many ENT's and audiologists don't know anything about and I wonder how many out there with unknown causes also have EVAS. It can be diagnosed by measuring the aqueducts on a cat scan.

Do you know what color HA you will get , mine are purples , earmolds are too.


Someone told my mom I am HOH because she went to see some lions at a zoo and mom had her arms resting on her belly while be was pregnant with me. Mom did this :roll: after telling me this. LOL!
 
Momma had rubella in the first week to week and a half of her pregnancy (she was a nurse at the time)- I was born deaf and with severe cataracts & strabismus among other things.

:hmm: @Mark interesting that your mother had rubella while pregnant with you but you were born hearing THEN contracted it. Sounds like she had the rubella very late in her pregnancy. I don't think I had ever heard of a case like this.

@whatdidyousay! LOL interesting. My great-grandmother told my mother my disabilities was 'punishment' for her marrying a Catholic. HUGE :roll:

You do know there is a "Quote" feature here, yes? According to my Mom, she contracted it 3 weeks before I was born, and that more than likely caused me to be born early-- I was born 3 weeks early. As for the case, it's very, very rare. I am one of a very few handful of people who can actually say this.

I have to tell you your great-grandmother is dead wrong ! My dad had 3 brothers that did not marry a Jewish woman and their kids hearing was fine.
My Jewish dad married my mom who was a Jewish woman and I was born HOH.
