I was wondering.... if a hearing person learning to sign offends you --- when you are trying to communicate with them???? Do you find yourself more frustrated or understanding/helping???? :ily:

That question has been answered all across the board...and also that question does not belong under the Introduction section. Wait, don't get worried....you're new...I understand. I'll give you a break..

Those four links would help you read up.

I'll transfer this thread to the General Discussion in a while.

For me, it wouldn't bother me if a hearing person tells me that they would like to learn sign language. I'll hate to do it just because this hearing person wants to "boast" around that they have learned signs. I would prefer that this person is learning sign language for the sakes of communication.

Heres what I have noticed...in my high school we had to share the school with the hearies and natrually there would be a fight.

For some reason if the heaire ppl gives us the finger we, the deafies would ingore them and walk away HOWEVER if we gave them the finger they get pissed off and start a fight.

I don't know much about it. It was just an observation Ive had while I was in high school.

I am a big time cusser, so natch i flip the bird EVERYday. I flip the bird to my friends, co-worker and stangers (within reasons).

If they wanna break my fingers, fine I'll just learn how to flip the bird with my toes.

Opps, never mind my above post. thought it was talking about cussing. My mistake :o

I'm wondering why you'd be offended? Its just like anyone learning another language. I know very little sign, and will only sign words i know, i pick up what i can when i see it, if i have questions about a word, i ask... If we fumble through a few signs, let it go with the understanding that we're trying.

yeah they do when they do imitation sign that loks like they have arthritis.......

Understanding! They're only trying to communicate :). I'd try to help them if they don't know a specific sign, I'd show them the correct one and help along.

Sometimes, I feel that people get frustrated with me. I am learning to sign. When I am tired, that is when it is most frustrating because my concentration level is like nothing.

I've noticed with both Deaf and Hearing people... it has always been about talking. When I'm with Hearing people, they do sometimes over-extend their lip movements. I'd have to stop them and instruct them to talk normally. With my Deaf friends, they do mock me and the hearing people by imitating "Mr.Ed" the TV horse. I'd tell my Deaf friends that they don't do themselves any good when they mimic Mr.Ed because they look like utter fools.

i am hearing, but i am learning sign language. i don't go around telling everyone that, but if they want/need to know, i tell them. i like the idea that if a wanted to start a conversation with a deaf person, i could without haveing to ask them what, or saying something unfair.

I hate it when hearies realise that I'm Deaf -- they try to talk louder or gesture more, etc...idiots! I have had to explain that yelling won't do any help at all because I'm D E A F , cannot hear a THING! Duh~! As for the gesturing, I explain that it's not necessary to over-extaggerate the gesturings, just be 'normal' -- really, how can we know when normal is normal?!

Isnt there a better word we can use then "hearie"? I just think the word sounds retarted... And i think i'd sound stupid saying to someone "i'm hearing" No i dont have a better idea, no i also dont expect things to change, i'm just saying i think it sounds dumb, for what its worth

I don't mind being called a hearie. When I am with my fellow hearies, I call my deaf friend "My Deafies"

I get mad..

- only if the hearing person claim to know "everything" about ASL when he/she only took one semester of ASL 1010!

- when an interpreter rudely corrects me on my signing ability.

I have met a few hearing people who hates the term "hearies", and I always tell them, "So what? If you call us hearing impaired, then I can call you a hearie!!"

How about i dont call you "hearing impaired", as i never have, and we find a better word for people that can hear... suggestions:

those that can hear
un-deaf
non-deaf

And anything else that we can think up that doesnt suck. I dont mind calling people what they want, so long as its within reason, ie i will not call people handy capable or anything along those lines.
