Disability for obesity related health problems

Not only that, but much harder to access. Where I live, there is one farmer's market half an hour away that runs once a week from 9 AM to 3PM. Most people work within that window of time.

There's also a McDonald's, Wendy's, and Taco Bell all within 5 minutes walking distance of my house, all of which are open all day and most of the night through the drive-thru.

In cities it's easier to access healthy food but it's still even easier to get junk food.

I live in a small town just north of Lynchburg Va. There's tons of fast food places near where I live but the farmer's market is only open on Wed from 9am to 2 am and that's if there's fresh produce and it's 15 mintues away from where I live.

We are also forgetting that obesity is directly correlated to SES. The lower the economic category, the greater the chance for obesity. Why? Because healthier alternatives in food choices are often financially unavailable to this group. So, we penalize people for being poor? That seems to be a general consensus around here.

As someone who shops for food pantries for the poor I can tell you that you couldn't be more wrong. That's just a lame excuse. There are plenty of options for the poor......it just takes some thought and effort.

That could be a problem among those who are poor. They are most likely uneducated about nutrition or so busy trying to survive that they dont have energy left for being creative with the foods they buy.

It is not as simple for many people in the lower SEC range.

I used to live in a wealthy neighborhood near Bethedsa about 4 years ago and most people were in shape. Now, I live in a middle class area..I noticed more obese people here in my area. I couldnt believe the difference.

But the food options are available.

No doubt obesity and being poor go hand in hand...... So may have to do witheducation...... and some has to do with people using food for comfort and happiness. Most likely whatever led to them being poor also led to them being obese....... A lack of planning.

What's funny is the poor love Oprah.......and Oprah does show on shopping and coupons all the time. They just don't seem to retain the message. Of course Oprah does shows on weight loss too but she doesn't seem to retain her own message. Maybe she is a bad example for the poor :hmm:

Maybe Oprah can't afford nutritious food or she depends on fast food restaurants for all her meals. Must be her SES is to blame.

 could be. You know we hear how much she makes......but maybe she loses billions at the horse track.

Actually, the largest portion of Oprah's fans are white women over the age of 55. Perhaps because she is african american you mistakenly thought that her show was watched by minorites, but still, that does not equal poor :hmm:

I never said only the poor love Oprah :)

Since I am part African American I doubt the stereotype got me.....

Part Native American too :)

:wtf: Bad planning isn't the only reason people are poor. THere are some people out there who are poor because they didn't plan well. I know a few of those kinds of people myself, the kind of people that blew away their money on drugs and then couldn't make rent. But there are also poor people who budget their money very well but just don't have that much to budget with. For people who have little money to begin with, saving by buying cheaper in bulk is planning. It's totally unfair to judge all, or even most, poor people as being poor planners.

1) Where are these food pantries located and how easy are they to get to?
2) How many are there in relation to fast food places?
3) Is there any sort of requirement for eligibility?
4) If they do offer food, do they provide enough food per person/family to live on exclusively?

The food pantries were not the point.......the availability of low cost good foods at the grocery store was......

But I will answer anyway

1) I buy for two.....both are in the center of downtown
2) Of course there are more fast food places.....but fast food places are not free.....Food from the food pantry is
3) None.......even rich people can get it.....but I have never seen that happen
4)Depends on how much has been donated and how much they eat. Most people leave with about three bags of food.

Poor planning isn't just about budgets.......School and career choices count too. Not to mention family planning.

Wow, so the poor deserve to be poor. Perhaps they should just die off and "decrease the surplus population". Have you ever supposed that there are people in the world who have no opportunites and have been failed every step of the way?

In the world?????? ......of course

Well, I think the problem started when fast food restaurants became popular in the 60s or 70s, I believe and now people are realizing that eating there often isnt a good idea. Old habits are hard to break. My mom told me when I was a kid, going to a fast food restaurant was like a big family event..now, it is like a part of our meal planning. Hope I am making sense?

Not everyone can afford an elite education, and only a select few who apply get accepted, financial aid or a scholarship. Not everyone wants to be a doctor or a lawyer. So it is every person's fault that their parents couldn't send them to Harvard, or that their passion just happens to lie in a career that doesn't pay well? With family planning, poor people have the same biological drive as rich people so I don't see why they should get punished any more for it.
