Did you go to speech therapy as a kid?

I attended speech therapy until I graduated high school. 1 hour once a week. I had a good experience - lots of encouragement. She switched the speech exercise frequently which helped keeping my attention. I think the toys she gave me at the end of each session was a huge motivator. :)

During my high school years, it got to the point where I was not going to make much more progress that she allowed me to bring in homework if I wanted. I really liked that she found my limits and didn't push it. I am thankful for all the time and patience of those who worked with me.

My mom also paid my cousin to listen to me read out loud for 10 minutes a day for about 4 years so I could read verbally faster and correct pronunciation when needed. My cousin picked interesting books and he was pretty chill about it, so it worked out really well for me.

Did you go to speech therapy as a kid? How many times per week did you take speech therapy? yes, I went three times a week
How did you feel about going to speech therapy when you were a kid? Were it fun? Were it boring? were it tiring? I looked forward to it. It got me out of class.. :) I had fun with mine.

Do you have any good speech therapy memories? Or Bad speech therapy memories?
I do not recall any bad experiences or memories... I always remember having fun

Do you plan to send your kids to speech therapy, just like what you did as a kid? Any suggestions for this improvement of speech therapy methods for kids? My kids are all hearing...If my kids were HOH Yes, I would send them to speech theraphy. Speech is not for everyone but I think everyone should give it a shot.
:)

Yes I did. Twice a week in school. And constantly at home. My father sat at the dining table working with me daily. And it was miserable, as I could not get it to please him. I did get slapped, sadly.

My younger daughter had speech therapy once a week in school, but she is hearing. Her speech just suffered, I think because we lived far from family and she had no live model.

That's really terrible. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

It seems that your time was bad. Im sorry. :( I remember one of them kept point a finger pushed up under my chin and it hurts! I dont remember why she did that. *shrug*

My daughter is in speech and language. She attends to speech & langauge once a week for an hour starting in the fall but in the past twice a week. She needs to work on developing her langauge and pronounces. So far she likes her speech therapist. WHEW! Now i am worried about this fall that she will be seeing the new speech therapist/language. I know she will tell me right away if she has problems with her. my son does not need it. I am glad so we can focus on one kid. She is doing better and better but very slowly.

Your father would slap you? I am so sorry to hear that Botts.

which can be avoided if ASL is emphasized first

What a ridiculous implication.

I would appreciate you keeping your inflammatory comments to yourself.

I can see where he was going with that, though. Learning ASL as a way to communicate helps pave the way for learning speech since that takes time.

His implication was that if parents don't use ASL with their child first, then they run the risk of being abused. Quite a horrific, and incorrect statement. If someone is an abuser, then they are an abuser.

I certainly would have never slapped my child if he didn't produce speech accurately, or couldn't speak. If a parent loves their child and understands the implications of hearing loss they wouldn't do that.

Bott- please don't take my above comment and relate it to your experience. I'm sure your dad loved you, but he was clearly misguided and perhaps also suffered abuse as a child?

Do any of you remember if I remember RIGHT. I remember there were the lights of red, green and blue when you voice it and it showed which colors show up? maybe I have mixed up with the lights what it is used for. :hmm: I know it is no longer used.

Did you go to speech therapy as a kid?
Yeah when my parents found out I was Deaf about 3 to 16.

How many times per week did you take speech therapy?
2 times, sometimes 3 times per week. As I moved from my hometown to new town, it dropped to 1 per week, when I went to high school for final 2 years it dropped to 1 per month.

How did you feel about going to speech therapy when you were a kid? Were it fun? Were it boring? were it tiring?
I hated it. I just cannot understand the speech therapist is saying. I always fail it badly esp when she covers her mouth for me to try hear words when it impossible for me.

Only time I liked going speech therapy when it is not speech therapy. It was when I was in new mainstream school in new town, my whole class bullied me, teachers didn't care, bullies was teachers favourite students. Speech therapy lady I had took me out of class as many times she can and we play games, I didn't have to my voice or anything, just play games. She isn't allowed tell staff I was being picked on, she got no power to stop bullies cos she not one of school staff, just speech therapy comes in few days a week for few hours.

Do you have any good speech therapy memories? Or Bad speech therapy memories?
Bad memories. Read above.

Do you plan to send your kids to speech therapy, just like what you did as a kid? Not like I did. If I had kids, it be 1 hour max per week and will stop any time kid wants and it got be fun and no covering mouth, no telling kid is wrong all times, do NOT expect kid get it right 1st time.

If kid don't want one I will stop it.

I don't think the causal factor in parent turning abuser was no ASL...don't think bottesini implied this either.

My Parents did not punish me if I spoke wrong.. nore did I get punished by my speech therapist. I was lucky to have paitence people in my life.

Did you go to speech therapy as a kid? How many times per week did you take speech therapy?

Yes. I went 5 days a week up until grade school..then it was like 3 times a week.

How did you feel about going to speech therapy when you were a kid? Were it fun? Were it boring? were it tiring? During the earlier years, I dont really remember much of it but as I got older, I hated it. Very very boring and tiring. Also stressful because I knew I wasnt going to pronounce the words perfectly so I knew I was going to get criticized for it. That just made my stomach in constant knots prior to speech class.

Do you have any good speech therapy memories? Or Bad speech therapy memories?

Mostly bad. Yelling, lots of "No's No's", teacher with bad breath, facing that I am not like my hearing peers.

Do you plan to send your kids to speech therapy, just like what you did as a kid? Any suggestions for this improvement of speech therapy methods for kids?
My son had speech therapy and I told the teacher straight out that I dont want him to feel bad abouot himself. To improve it, dont criticize the children for god's sake! It is not their fault that they are deaf!

Do you have any good speech therapy memories?

Bad speech therapy memories?

teachers bad breath, pointed a finger up in my chin and it hurts but it was once. I dont remember why she did that to me. She constantly touched my chin, cheeks and use the stick on my tongue that made me gag.

Do you plan to send your kids to speech therapy, just like what you did as a kid? Yes I would question speech therapist's plans and expects to ensure that she or he would not say anything like " no thats wrong!" But i met my girl's speech therapist and she seems like she knows what to do with kids. It's completely different because my girl is hearing. Any suggestions for this improvement of speech therapy methods for kids?

More games, more visual aide and let kids express their thoughts so it will lead them willing to speak on their own paces.

I had speech therapists come to my home when I was kids. I one speech therapist that was HOH herself and I loved her! My crazy dad could jealous of her and got rid of her! I had a good memories of the speech therapist, in fact
my younger sister and I where talking about this speech therapist and my sister said she was jealous because my speech therapist would bring 'small gifts' for
me and the gift was things to help me with my speech. Then dad hired a male
speech therapist and once again dad got jealous and fired him. Dad hire one more speech therapist and I liked her, she knew dad was going fired her so on her last day my speech therapist told my dad off! She said " you a horrible monster and you're breaking your child spirit!" I was about 9 or 10 years old and for some reason hearing that made me cry. After that dad did hire me any more speech therapists. I did go to one a grade school but that was a joke!
My daughter had to take a few speech lessons in grade as she was copying my speech. My daughter hearing is fine so she only needed a few lessons When I was kid people told my parents to not have me sleep in the same bedroom with my younger sister because she would start copying my speech.
My younger sister had to also take a few lessons to correct her speech as she was picking up my speech effect.
I can't remember how often my therapists came to my house, but I know it was not long enough to help me , my dad fired them all!

No, it's ok. I understood what you sympathized with.

Jiro got it right too though, that if ASL was what he wanted , I would have been more successful and he would have been less stressed.

We had no place for speech therapy when I was growing up. There was none in the school and the closest place was 50 miles away. My mother worked with me daily at home from lessons she had with voice and diction for her singing. People from the church would work with me. So, for me it was daily thing including weekends.

I guess my point is, if a parent is going to abuse their child they will do it regardless of whether or not a child spoke or signed.

I think that he is making an extreme exaggeration of reality. Most parents would not hit their children because they did not articulate a word properly.

My dad gave me speech lessons too! He sat me at kitchen table and told me to say "one, two, 'tree'!" Dad was born in Russia and they do not use the 'th' sound! So I would copy my dad and repeat " one , two, tree." and dad would say good girl! My older sister and brother would be in the doorway ROFLTAO! Dad was so happy to have me sound like him!
