Definition of "book learning"

I am scratching my head how "book learning" transformed into a thread about kokonut's academic background...

That completely contradicts your post where you just admitted that you did not have the academic requirements to enter the Ph.D. program. No program accepts a student with meeting the requirements. What happened was, you applied, and they told you to take the courses you needed to be eligible, and then reapply at that time.:cool2:

I had the academic requirements. Just a few courses were deficient but I got the offer contigent on good grades.

I think it's because some of his posts were inconsistent with his claims of having the right academic background.

I think it started when he made some negative posts toward Ph.D.'s and then stated that he had turned down the opportunity to earn one.

Sorry. Not buying it. One professor cannot override the admissions board, and particularly not so in a doctorate program. They generally have 5 times as many applicants as they accept. Doctorate programs are very selective. Likewise, you cannot be offered an assistantship unless you are a registered student. No Ph.D. program is begging for students. It is the other way around. Students are begging to get into the Ph.D. programs.

She did not override them. She consulted with them, they agreed.

Oh, I had the asst. deal ready.

a prime example of intellectual dishonesty, si? :hmm:

Sorry, kokonut. Does not ring true. They aren't looking for candidates. They have more candidates that actually meet the requirements than they can admit. And, unless you were actually a doctoral student, you did not have a graduate assistantship.

And how could you have been admitted to the fall cohort, when in June you were told that you would have to complete additional courses to be eligible for admission? You could not have completed those courses in that amount of time.

While I do like to see nutjob get the smackdown when he's in the wrong, I believe that he got some official acceptance into a PhD. program, even if it wasn't through official channels or came with a probationary status or contingencies (not a big deal, as many new PhD admits have these). I think we're just arguing around technicalities at this point.

What I would like to know though, Koko, and which you still have not answered, is: WHY DID YOU TURN DOWN THE DAMN PhD????????

Ooooh....but I did have a GRA deal worked out starting Aug. 24, 1999!!

Civil engineering does deal with Earth science. Earth science is a broad, broad science. And there are many fields under the civil engineering umbrella.

Sounds like you were interested in using civil engineering for hydrology-related.
