Civil Engineering? I thought your major is in Earth Science? It's 2 completely different fields.

That doesn't answer the question.

All acceptance into a Ph.D. program is contigent upon progress. At any time, if you are not performing up to standard, you can be dropped from the program. That is nothing peculiar to your acceptance. Research assistantships are only granted to graduate students. You cannot perform as a research assistant without being enrolled in a graduate program.

So, again, why did you go to the effort and expense of applying to the Ph.D. program if you had no intention of entering?

No....

I love Earth science... not major in Earth science. I majored in math and geophysics, eventually changing over to geology with a focus on hydrogeology work. My grad background enabled me to get into the PhD Civil Engineering program though I would need to take some additional courses.

Ahhh....so you weren't accepted! You did not meet the requirements for acceptance. That means you did not turn them down, they turned you down.

I had every intention of entering. It was a letter saying that I'm accepted and all I had to is either accept the letter or reject it. Other opportunities presented itself that I decided to reject it at that time.

Yea that's what I mean. Your background, job, and previous posts point toward to Earth Science/hydrology related. Cannot be in Civil Engineering grad program with those background... unless - like you said - gotta take some additional courses... most likely 1-2 years extra.

Do you want to make a bet? I got accepted. Dr. Brubaker worked with admission and once they agreed, she drew up a letter to get me into the program and asst. deal.

That completely contradicts your post where you just admitted that you did not have the academic requirements to enter the Ph.D. program. No program accepts a student with meeting the requirements. What happened was, you applied, and they told you to take the courses you needed to be eligible, and then reapply at that time.:cool2:

Civil engineering does deal with Earth science. Earth science is a broad, broad science. And there are many fields under the civil engineering umbrella.

Sorry. Not buying it. One professor cannot override the admissions board, and particularly not so in a doctorate program. They generally have 5 times as many applicants as they accept. Doctorate programs are very selective. Likewise, you cannot be offered an assistantship unless you are a registered student. No Ph.D. program is begging for students. It is the other way around. Students are begging to get into the Ph.D. programs.
