Do you actually believe you are well educated about the issues involved in childhood implantation and the development of language in deaf children to have an educated opinion about it?
I am NOT responding to faire joure, since I think she has pretty much bought all the pro oral propaganda lock stock and barrel, and does not understand that while many deaf kids can aquire better spoken language with a CI, they are still pretty much delayed overall in their mastery of spoken language.
But look at the language she uses...she says "development of language"......hmmmmm...not spoken language. Faire joure what you do not understand whatsoever is that oral only views Sign as a "crutch" Meaning someone could have sign abilty on a Harvard level, but have preschool/kindergarten spoken language level, but according to the folks at CID, they'd be "low functioning" b/c they don't have sophisticated spoken language

i specifically said language and NOT spoken language because that is what i meant. I meant language development in deaf children. That could be spoken language or english through SEE signing or ASL. I wrote exactly what i meant. You chose to read it with YOUR bias, not mine.

I support you throughly - No need to hear the propaganda. Many of my friends are switching to ASL only, albeit in their 20s but better late than never...

Sad they have to go through all that the first couple decades then finally have that AHA moment... The sad thing is most of them will go "My parents tried their best" which is true...

But will they ever know "My parents were actually told by the Deaf... and decided this?" Probably not.

And, I support you all. I also support a full toolbox approach. In my view, it's what is best for a kid. ASL must be apart of their development. If it's not, then you're screwing that kid up; plain and simple. If they decide to speak when they get older, fine. They have the skills to use/not use. Same with ASL. It's about giving that kid choices and helping them develop into happy, HEALTHY adults. Too many kids have suffered in the past.

Why must it continue? It doesn't have to.

I think there's a broken record playing somewhere in here.

PFH, what are their backgrounds? Do you have any raised oral/mainstreamed who are now really hardcore abt ASL?

**nodding**. I'd say that is a pretty safe guess seeing that the hearing parents responding to this post have such a difficult time in admitting that they could possibly be wrong. Audism at it's best. Hearing parents know more than the deaf.

It simply makes sense to have available to a child all the tools they could possibly use. Not just a screwdriver until the screwdriver won't work for the job, and then run around trying to find a hammer.

Ditto. I can't say this enough! Yes, oral abilty is an AWESOME AWESOME tool, and many kids can aquire it. I mean the days when most kids only had a handful of spoken words is way in the past. Which is good. But still....most kids while they can develop oral abilty, still can't develop sophiscated oral abilty. Exactly like the way you could have a conversation in French after taking a few years of it in school, but you would be lost when the conversation and vocab went above a fourth grade French level.
Also, oral skills tend to be useful either one on one or on a small group level. Most hh people are LOST in crowds. Also most dhh people still miss a lot of words, especially if the speaker isn't the greatest speaker.
Understanding someone 100% (through a 'terp or through one on one signs) vs only understanding 80 or 90%
Not to mention that spoken English and ASL bilingality will help if hearing aids or CIs break or give up the ghost.....and I mean I doubt that an oral only person would be on the level of a hearing person, in situtions like......ummmm let's just say the type of situtions where back in the old days, it would set off the chasity belt alarm on your hearing aids! LOL
Also, has anyone ever done a study on the emotional impact of constant therapy?

That's probably conditioned, though, Jillio; as you probably know. I wouldn't blame the parents, so much, as I would the medical establishment. It's starts right at the beginning when the infant fails the screening test. Right from that moment forward, the parents are told to seek confirmation of the hearing loss and mitigation of it.

Or, hell, I just thought of something... Why do we even HAVE a screening test for hearing loss? That's another debate all by itself, but think about this for a second... Say, a Deaf of Deaf couple is delivering their first child. The couple is reasonably sure that their baby is going to be deaf and their OK with it. Should the medical establishment even get involved and screen the baby? I think that given the above scenerio, you're just muddying up waters that need not be muddied.

Thoughts?

Got some here. Shel comes to mind.

I think DD meant by "hardcore" as is someone who is against CIs or any deaf learning speech skills?

I am not sure that would be the correct description of me but if DD meant someone who is passionate about ASL after growing up not being exposed to it, then yes, that is me. :D

Ha, no I know we have a lot of full toolboxers, who were orgionally oral onliers here.
I was just wondering what PFH's experiance was in Colarado. jillo.....I assume you're pretty involved in the Deaf community in Ohio...do you see a lot of former oral only kids discovering ASL after struggling in the hearing world?
The thing is.......why does AG Bell portray the Deaf Community as a whole, as being anti HA/CI and anti speech skills? I don't get it. Many of us were raised orally and mainstreamed. Even many DODAs wear hearing aids or CIs and get speech training.

are we seriously going to gloss over the fact that OB suggested that we NOT have newborn hearing screens? That right there shows ignorance about the issues related to deafness and language (all language, not spoken language).

Depends on who "we" are? Sounds like you expect me to get worried about the loss over hearing screens to baby sign programs? Seriously..

My mistake! Great if you could delete my quote in your reply.

Anyways...in your opinions, do these parents who blog only about their children's ears and mouths are explioting them?
