Deaf people and SSI

Well some of hearings does have a problem about SSI. Some of my families refuse to talk to me or hang out with me just because I was on the SSI, I tried and tried to explain to them, but they just won't listen to me.. Like if I go to my grandma's house where most of the families go for celebrating, some of them might not tell "hi how are you" to me, just "do you work?" then left me out. That's allright with me, I knew it is their problem that I don't need to waste my time with.
Sorry to hear. My sister got upset with me when I was on SSA years ago but she still talk with me to this day. She does not believe in welfare system either till her daughter got pregnant and use state money to help to pay for the hospital and prenatal care. What is so difference between two systems to help people. oh well.

I had to work in order to pay for my college.

I believe most people take issue with others that ABUSE SSI, not USE SSI.

Just to clarify. There are people with legitimate reasons for using that and then there are people who are nothing but lazy with a low self-esteem.

U think people who college SSI while going to college is abusing it? What if they couldnt find a job and risk dropping out of college? My ex hubby and I split up during my first semester of grad school and I tried to find a part time job to support myself thru college...no luck so I had to apply for SSDI to pay for my bills, otherwise I would be on the streets.

No. They have to pay for books and living expenses somehow. Scholarships, loans and grants work just as well as SSI, if not better. I have a scholarship right now and the free course benefit so I'm pursuing a BS degree soon.

Abusing SSI is people who work under the table while collecting SSI. That is dishonest and unfair to people who pay taxes. Abusing SSI is people who use SSI for luxury items, though this is RARE.

Again, a legitimate reason to use SSDI and it does not come from taxes.

Ahh..I got what you mean. I agree with u about working under the table while collecting SSI.

You should had say them in the first place then we wouldn't have problems with what youre saying.

He can trade his hearing for my deafness. I rather to hear and work than being deaf and being denied by hearings over again and again.

Doesn't it frustrate you that the reason why relay operator or terps got the job is because of existence of deaf people? Hell they earn more than what we get from SSI. Lmao.

Yea, some people thought the welfare is just wasting our money while it is really not..

That's not nice... crook person sent deaf person to exit door.
If, I am her then I would get lawyer. Lawyer and I will smell the company's Euro Dollars.

Some deaf people are still on SSI after found job, especially on low paying job, such as retail, restaurant, fast food or others, just depends on how much earn per monthly, it does happen to me after hired at retail then called SSI and they cut on few hundreds dollars, also still keeping on SSI since not make enough money. Again, it's depends on situation, every situation are different based on individual.

I will going off to college in Jan and be full time student, can't wait and will looking for new part time job to support some of it.

My friend who is HOH is looking for a teaching job and he applied to several schools in the area. He wants to work with deaf kids in the public schools so he got called for an interview by one public school that had an opening back in July. He goes to the interview and was told that the school's priority was to hire a teacher by August 25th before the students started. It was teaching oral deaf kids. His hearing loss is pretty mild and he can use spoken English pretty well. Can talk on the phone and everything. He said all was going so well during the interview until the principal saw that he wore a hearing aide and she made a face and said "You arent deaf arent you?" He said that he has a mild hearing loss and then after that, the attitudes of the interviewers changed with him like becoming cold and very uncomfortable. At the begining of the interview, before they found out that he was HOH, they said that he was their best candidate ..well, guess what? After the interview, they told him that they will let him know around Sept 12th. He asked why a nd they said that they want to call two more people for an interview.

He was confused cuz they made a big issue about how well qualified he was, how he was their best candidate and how they MUST have a teacher by August 25th.

Now, they say they will contact him around Sept 12th? He feels he is not gonna get the job cuz of his hearing loss and that they want to keep the job open longer to see if any hearing applicants contact them.

That was why I said "Booo to oral deaf ed" in the other thread the other day cuz I had just been told of this and was very very upset.

Discrimination and my friend may have to apply for SSI if he doesnt get a teaching job since nobody wants to hire him cuz of his hearing loss???? He has 10 yeears of teaching experience, is "highly qualified" by NCLB, and holds 3 degrees. Yet, he may need to get SSI...isnt that shitty?

Does it will affect me if I want be high school teacher and teaching in history with hearing students if I'm qualified in near future?

What kind of job do you have , if you mind me asking?

True most deaf can get job but most of the time they are unhappy with their jobs due to many reasons (i.e suffering discrimination, lack of communication, interpreters aren't provide, etc.) I am certain most of deaf people (if they re smart) are using ssi/ssdi to help them alfoat when they get salary that pay more than what they get from ssi/ssdi per month.

SSI or SSDI does not grant you have a well off life. I think whoever is "lazy" will never get anything better going on in his/her life if he/she depends on SSI/SSDI for the rest of life.

I have to agree with you on this one. The d/Deaf population is one of the most underemployed populations in the United States. Conversely, statistics also show that, when provided proper accommodation, they are also one of the most productive employable populations in the United States. And, that proper accommodation for a deaf employee will generally cost a company between 0 and 100 dollars. Until we educate employers regarding the benefits of hiring deaf employees, the general attitude will not change, and it will be necessary for SSI/SSDI funds to be used as assistance.

BTW...for those who have claimed that hearing people can't get SSI/SSDI...this is incorrect. The largest segment of the population collecting SSI/SSDI funds are hearing.

Most companies are afraid to hire deaf people. They do not understand about deafness.

10 years ago, the company was very interest me but one thing problem is require to use PHONE if any machines get any problem at night shift. They are not interested on TTY/Relay Service. Kind of slow - not want waste time with relay service.

I see some ADs wrote "Lazy to look for job"
I will not agree "lazy to look for job". Many deaf people did try harder without agent or any help.

Actual, it's more like prick on job on most certain deaf individual who seek what they like and cannot get job. Parents once said, "No matter how much you don't like kind job, just take it, you fool!". So, I took it anywhere and able to claim the job in no time.

One day, I was laid off from company. We had VW Jetta, Benz and Porsche. Also, high cost to live on property. I had no problem with SSI.

I was out of job for 6 months. I applied over 200 different places still no one call me for job interview. Very very hard to find any job with good salary. Same company re-hired me. They cut down my salary. I am not happy to go back there. Also, hurt my feeling about salary. I think most companies are dirty business to play with workers.

I prefer not remove SSI for the Deaf. I will not agree with your friend's wish. Most deaf people works hard for less salary. Older deaf people will hard time to find job.

Higher risk for Deaf people are over 40 years old. Today is not very good economy. Most company wants downsize or buy out older workers. That's big risk for older deaf people. Many companies will hard to accept to hire deaf worker. We do not want to see many deaf people end up to live on street.

Old Soviet - many deaf people had good live under Communist.
Today, many russian deaf people make poor live without job and welfare. (someone told me about russia). Not want to see happen in the USA.

Ouch, I'm really shocked that you applied 200 workplaces to work and got no call or not hired, it should be very tough, sorry about happened to you.

I think your major interest is in photographer?

I have rarely to see deaf people who live on street, most of them are under live with someone, even if parent put their deaf adult (son/daughter) away and they have live with someone if unable to support on own, I had noticed like that and I almost got kicked out in 2 years ago due disagreement with parent about college situation and had called police and long discussion in group with 2 polices, my parent were threated me about send to live in group home but I rejected it since it's my choice to reject to live in group home due my privacy/medical reason, I prefer to live with someone over group home. It's very sad about some hearing parents are put not-well educated deaf adult to group home after graduated from HS with poor education and bad communication skill, good thing, I have rights to reject and do on my own to have more optional than that. Good thing, 2 polices are agreed with me about situation and make me to stay with parent, even my parent are gulped and quietly after that as well.

You are lucky you have more rights today. I am not young and I spent three years in a group home after high school. It was really hard to get out of it. And I am still very very upset about it 30 years later.

Oh really, they don't let you get out of here in past?

It seems like 60's and 70's aren't very good rights for deaf people.
