Deaf/HOH, What are your pet peeves from hearing people?

I think my interest in ASL is dying.

Oh no. I was born deaf. But had surgery and now i am hearing. I do go and get checled for my hearing but na im good. I am distracted though. So sometimes people do think im deaf. But well i did comment cu people still ask me those kind of questions that sometimes can be pretty annoying.

I don't think you need to decide it's dying... I think you just need to gain a better understanding of what it's like.

When I was a kid I reeeeally wanted braces because all my friends had them. Once you have them, you don't want people to notice them. Your perspective changes.

Deafness isn't something people feel like they need to be PC over and tiptoe around.... both for better and for worse. I don't think though that you'd actively pursue people with dwarfism, a physical impairment, or a distinguishing birthmark that isn't the norm..... we really just like to be looked at as the same. ASL is a beautiful language but that's only one part of it. You shouldn't be turned off by the language, but you should understand why the language is around. There are beautiful friendships and relationships that revolve around people almost forgetting that the other person is for all intensive purposes labeled "DEAF" or "DISABLED". You're more than welcome on this site, but just learn from the threads :)

Perhaps AllDeaf.com should get rid of the "Sign Language & Oralism" Section of the forum? The description of that section is:
http://www.alldeaf.com/sign-language-oralism/
"American Sign Language, English Sign Language, Oralism. Which one is it going to be, and why?"

If alldeaf.com changes the description of this section, maybe there wouldn't be Hearing people constantly asking for help with ASL.

Communication is a key to making friends. Wouldn't I make more German friends if I spoke German? Judging from the forums, some people complain about Hearing people and lack of communication. If Hearing people knew ASL, wouldn't that lessen the pet peeves?

Changing the name of the section wouldn't lesson the amount of people who enter this forum asking for help in the slightest. :laugh2: They would still come through just as many and just as steady as before because people don't want to read or pay attention, they want their instant gratification or answer.

The point isn't that you would make more German friends, the point is that you're seeking friends because they're Deaf to assist you with ASL or whatever alternative reason that's in your head. You're not going out meeting people, finding yourself drawn or interested to them and then finding out they're Deaf. You're seeking people out because they're Deaf... See the difference?

Hearing people knowing ASL doesn't lesson any pet peeves. Hearing people knowing ASL honestly becomes more annoying to me because I can't have a friggin conversation in ASL without most walking up and jumping right in the middle of my conversation to show they know a little ASL. I can't tell you how many times I'm shopping at Walmart or some crap and that happens! If I see two Deaf people signing I don't go jumping in the middle of their conversation! Sorry, I kind of added a pet peeve of my own in there, but it happens ALL too often! *Breathes*

Anyway, back on topic. The point is the Deaf community doesn't want people making friends with them because they're Deaf. Usually, all we want is to be treated like a normal human as you treat your friends now. ( Sure there's always an exception to the rule so that's why I say usually, I never lump or generalize people in a group. ) However, that's what you're doing. Lumping and generalizing. You should want to get to know people for who they are, what they believe in, stand for or admire as an individual... Not for their hearing ability, inability, skin color or whatever. That's all I was saying.

Just as someone said above in an earlier comment. ( Forgive me I think it was Amylynn? ) ASL isn't as common as you'd think among people who are deaf. I have far more deaf friends who don't use or know ASL than Deaf friends who do. It's not all like Switched at Birth up in here.

I guess her post that has answered to your post.

:aw:

What is my pet peeve from deaf people? Some deaf people don't sign because they don't want to be known as deaf. Sad!

Being with the Audist hearing parents along with the mainstream schools, including the CI surgery, the deaf felt ashamed of themselves and had to be burden with struggling trying to please the hearing society. The deaf have not accepted their deafness. That is still ongoing for many years even before we had hearing aids many years ago. What I meant to say that the hearing society is trying to make them be like the hearing people. **sigh** :(
