Deaf child hears for the first time

There were (and still are) Deaf teachers and staff at my son's TC school.

Do they have speech skills?

Shel, you are one of most trusted member. :)

Best place to work for deaf teacher - deaf school in our state and audist is nearly nonexistent. All students use full ASL to communicate, including HoH students and they have wonderful ASL program.

Our Medicaid won't cover CI at all and more opportunity for low income deaf students to attend at deaf school, also our lawmakers, including solid south conservatives strongly support our deaf school and they see as have a great value.

Thank u...I am very very against any discriminatory practices. I see that many people here imply that in order for a deaf person to get ahead, that person must function like a hearing person. Makes me sick. Ugh

Discrimination against the signing Deaf happens ...what are YOU doing about it? I am educating the community to see deafness as a different way of communication and we all can meet in the middle to collaborate. What are YOU doing in YOUR community to help combat the discriminatory practices against deaf people especially those who were unable to develop speech skills?

Mine too. In fact, the head teacher is Deaf. To answer your other question, she has very minimal speech skills. The aids are hearing.

Yea, the situation in Utah is so bad.

Yes, Utah is more affluent than Alabama and Utah has narrower in Gini coefficient (based on inequality) while Alabama is pretty wider due to more rich people and more poor people. The Medicaid in Utah cover CI too and speech therapies.

Beside Utah, do any states have deaf school that is majority oralism?

Oh.....I want to add. Our wonderful ADer, Cloggy, even said he would not want a teacher who is deaf who has no speech skills teaching his daughter. He even said that his daughter met a teacher who is deaf who made grunting noises while signing and his daughter stared at her like an alien or something like that because she was not used to it. If I remember correctly, he said that he and his wife removed their daughter from that deaf teacher's presence. So, I asked him if he would ever want a deaf person with no speech skills teaching his child, he said no.

Why the heck are some of you (old ADErs) are shocked that teachers who are deaf themselves don't get hired for TC and oral only programs? U had a parent say it here on and that he doesn't want these deaf people teaching his deaf daughter! And yet you act all shocked and dismayed that such a thing can happen. Hmmmm?

How messed up is that? That is what the whole viewpoint behind the oral only and CI movement brings.

That's really sweet of you to think of Cloggy, but it's best to not put words in people's mouths unless you can provide the link to the post.

I didn't even remotely question the veracity of your claim. I made the statement that the situation could have been pursued to the fullest extent of the law. Laws are there for a reason.

Yes, same here.

Audist - :barf:

Mod note:

Let's drop it about accusing who is lying or whatnot. Let's move on, I don't want to have to close this thread if this continues.

Thanks.

Hi guys, I'm new around here and a "hearie". I'm just curious about why giving someone back their ability to hear, especially when they're young enough to learn to speak easily, is a bad thing. I don't mean this to come across as audist as I really am just curious. I'm autistic, so I know what it's like to feel demeaned and belittled when the "normal" population tries to cure you, but the thing about autism is that, for all its negatives -- difficulty with socialisation, sensory processing issues, etc -- it has some real benefits to counterbalance the negatives; an exceptional memory, a very strong ability to focus, and a bare honesty that isn't seen as often in the "normal" population, so I'd love to know what the positives of being deaf consist of. I've sometimes thought it would be nice to be able to completely shut off my hearing once in a while, primarily due to the fact that my sensory processing difficulties make the world way too loud for me without bothering anyone else.

And you don't think that the auditory oral organizations don't do the same thing?
And yes, you're right....there is a clear and obvious motive....to try to SERVE kids the best EARLY ON. Meaning they get EVERYTHING........ASL, English, spoken language services and EVEN maybe Cued Speech as a SUPPLEMENT. Isn't that better to give kids a FULL TOOLBOX early ON?

No, sadly the clear and obvious motive to exaggerate is so that they do not lose funding. Not sure why you are throwing the straw men out there. My call is for informations on ALL of. the possible options.

And I have spoke out against the oral only philosophy and u and others are all hung ho about parents ` right and allowed other ADErs to attack me for that. What a f€€||| rock of bs If that teacher had spoke out against it u would NOT be on his/her side. U would be all about parental rights . Don't be a hypocrite. U don't care, u just don't. Don't lie.

Yes, I would. I am very much against real discrimination.

To add: this isn't a "parental rights" issue. This is a school that is most likely breaking labor law and ADA law by setting a policy of not hiring a Deaf teacher. That is illegal, I am very much against that.

Of course they think I made either up. Like I said, they don't care. Whatever. They don't want to admit that discrimination does happen to deaf people especially to this who don't have speech skills.

I believe it happened. I also wish she would have reported it. Discrimination should not happen and this harms the kids and their parents. It's a very bad thing.

I, as a Deaf person, just cannot support and advocate such discriminatory views like that but YOU aren't helping by your statements. How?

By the way,.. yes, it was hearsay by that teacher who told me. In addition to that, that teacher was not a Deaf ed teacher...but a teacher who teaches specials to hearing kids. That teacher didn't like the practice used by the deaf and hh director. That person doesnt know any ASL. That was why I was amazed what I learned even though I already knew it has been happening all over this country.

Call me a liar.....fine, but it is happening out there with the oral only programs. I just cannot support it.

I don't believe anyone called you a liar or believed that you were lying. I believed you, that is why I immediately said she should sue.

Oh the 1 in 10 bits as I mentioned before, earlier in this thread, was about the requirement for lipreading in conversations, sorry if i was too quick but what i read /told to read was...only 10% of cochlear implant users can communicate with listening only - without lipreading, as for the rest they are still functioning like Hoh's...

and i'd believe that

and lastly, im not gonna hang around in this thread much longer because it's unproductive ans getting boring...aside from that im delighted to see TXgolfer really means against discrimination, and encourages an action to it, kind of a sigh of relief. (sorry but true)

anyways,
Best
and id continue with other threads as i feel its a waste of time and energy to a point when you cant win over, fixed minds... this is what real life is like too.
so rather stay in peace with others (even if we disagree quite strongly), this forum is meant for making freinds not hatred.

No, there is no way to get around not hiring someone based on a "disability" which is exacts retry much what Shel said. If that was the case, this teacher should have taken it to court.

It should go to court, yes, but don't sit there and try to tell me that there is no way to get around it. Whether their reason will stand up in court or not depends on the court. They don't always rule the way we think they should.

perhaps, one of the reason why, 'cant get around it' maybe be due to 'discretion' and the disabling of Deaf people's views regarding legal matters, like dkf747 said in bold.

and i dont like it either

Hi guys, I'm new around here and a "hearie". I'm just curious about why giving someone back their ability to hear, especially when they're young enough to learn to speak easily, is a bad thing.

The short answer is fear. People are afraid that it will destroy things that they believe.

In the past, oral only did not work, because people did not have CI's and good enough hearing aids for it to work effectively. Because of this, a strong movement came about arguing against it for ASL only teaching. This worked well until technology caught up.

Today, there are a lot more people that have HA's and CI's who go the oral route. But, to put a new twist on it, today most people don't believe in a one or the other theory. The prevailing view is a hybrid training method of using both ASL and oral teaching.

Yet, there are still those who will argue for one over the other.

When was ASL only teaching practiced? Schools for the Deaf were TC until recently........that means they used BOTH speech AND Sign.
