Reba i told scuba a simular thing. Hes a scubadiver you know. I told him if he ever find a tresure chest from the pirates stole 300 years ago you keep it!! Do not tell the goverment anything cause they would call the press,,Take your picture with a senators handshake and thet would be the end of it.. That tresure chest you found would be displayed in a museum and youll still be poor in empty. You keep quiet and negoate for it. If i found a tresure chest id look around ask around some wealthy people and tell em suppose i have 100 LBS of gold and silver how much you ask for it? Thats how you get the money and dont end up dry.
Actually, there are places that pay you for your findings before putting them on display.

Not to mention the fact that Maritime Law usually recognizes that anybody who finds anything of value which has been abandoned, gets to keep it. The general rule is that once the insurance claims are settled, the wreck is considered to be abandoned and it’s free game for anybody who wants to try to salvage it. That’s why they can’t do anything about all those treasure hunters who are pillaging the wreck of the Titanic. They’re not breaking any Maritime Laws—what they’re doing is perfectly legal.

Well, RavenSteven, honesty is the best policy. When you find something, you return it to the rightful owner and he will reward you. And you will come away with a good feeling that you've done something right.

What if you lose something extremely important, anod someone else found it and refuse to return to you, how would you feel? :S

Or maybe I'm preaching all this for nothing..... -_-;;;

Tounces yes on somethings honesty is the best policy..Like it i found someones lost cat or dog id return it because i know how it feels to have your pet lost. I found someones cat and return it, it made some girl happy her cat is back. Or a dog id return it not if i found gold coins, money, or anything else valuable.Because its finders keepers loosers weepers. And about marinetime laws,,Scuba told me you must report any stolen tresure you find in the sea to the goverment. Now i know how that is cause you get a handshake and thats it. Vamp i didnt know if museums pay you for displaying your items??tell me more.

:P too bad karma won't bite your ass for THAT

Erm, Zesty...

I think Karma has bitten RavenSteve on the backside. Look at his predicament...He's losing his hearing, and he's quite bitter about it. I'd say Karma is having a lot of fun with him right now.

Wouldn't you?

What goes around does come around.

Exactly. The law of salvage is totally different from finding a bag of money on the street. Especially Ravensteve's example of "treasure" lost 300 years ago, compared to a bag of cash that someone living still has legitimate claim to (referring to Ravensteve's story about his brother).

reba you mean if i swim into the titanic whatever i find is mine? Even if i found a pair of diamond earings?

yes there you go

:Nods: I'm glad you returned the cat and the dog back to their owners. And, yeah, loose coins found on the floor is for keeps...if nobody else claim them. But finding a large bag of money is something else. 6_6

Even if I found a very old silver dollar coin lying about, I would definitely ask around to see if anyone has lost it. My family passed some coins down from 1800s, and if I lost them, I would definitely want someone to return it to me.

Sure. If you mount the expedition to go that far under the sea, you deserve to help yourself to whatever you find. There is likely no one to return the goods to and insurance probably covered them anyway. Good luck!

Piles of cash or other property which belong to someone else are another thing. There is no "finders keepers" law. There are MANY property laws that protect against someone coveting property as their own, even if they "don't know whose it is."

If someone steals from me and leaves it for you to find, it does not mean it's yours to keep. At the same time, if you lose something important (like your hearing aid or cochlear implant) and I find it, would you rather hope I return it or would you rather I start playing BASH IT AGAINST A ROCK UNTIL IT BLOWS UP?

Do you follow the bible? I don't care if you do or not, but in the bible, Deuteronomy 22 says that if you don't return it, you have committed theft. Do you want to go to hell for "finders keepers?"

These are smart kids!!! My brother found a bag full of money and showed it to my dad.And dad turned it over to the police.THAT WAS STUPID!! My brother doesant understand the hard cold reality of this world. The Goverment doesnt want you have money. If i found that money i buired it somewhere and tell my friends they must keep it a secret. Or we split up the money and you bury it in your secret place. My brother was a dumbass took the money to my dad and cops pick up and bank president shook my dads hand and that was the end of it. The money he found was from a bank robbery the robbers must have lost that bag. So that was stupid i told mark jesus christ,,Dont you have a brain ?? You dont have a god damn clue about reality.I was 14 at that time and he was 8.
Smart Kids

:-o Your brother did the right thing, and he is not stupid. {comment removed} That money does not belong to you or anyone in your family and Your father did the right thing turn the money in. How would you feel if you lost something that is value to you? Would you want someone to return it to you or keep it? If your brother found a bag of lots of money it could be from a bank robbery or drug busted that a drug dealer hid it's money. You don't want to keep something that been stolen, or received from Drugs that means You support bank robberies or drug given away.

Hahaha, RSteve, just "swim" to the Titanic? Do you have any idea of the magnitude of a project like that? Do you have any idea how deep this ship is? Do you have any idea about the conditions for diving to these riches? I may be way off but 20 million dollars is probably chump change for an undertaking such as this. Besides, the people there now who have a stake to the contents would probably feed ya to the fishies if you came along! LOL!
