CSDR getting a bunch of love!

Do you know anyone who graduated from CSDR became teacher for the deaf? I do not know anyone nor have met one yet so far. Also kids need to pass exit exam for high school diploma.

I know several. There is also one in the video that graduated from CSDR, then went back to teach at CSDR. I suggest you to view the video.

Nice video. I am happy for them but CSDR is not for every one. I went there for few years and I hated it but that was back in 70's. I am hoping the education there today is much improvement than when I was there. I did not learn at all there.

Yeah TC started in late 1960's. Long story but education back then at CSDR were sucked.

I hope your right.

I was more happier at mainstream schools than being at deaf school. I graduated top 19th out of 500 kids there. If I stayed at CSDR, I would never pass Gallaudent college test. Alike I said CSDR or CSDB is not for everyone.

I am sorry that you had to suffer back then. That was when the school was in it's TC/Oral (??) period. (This is news to me, btw.)

At least now they know the right way to educate the deaf children. This is a big step forward in educating the deaf.

Yes, one and she is 52 years old. Must have graduated in the late 70s or early 80s.

Great video and shows that the kids are very engaged in learning not just sitting there passively.

One student said "100% access to communication"

Yep..cant get that at oral or mainstreamed programs.
AMEN! I would have loved going to a school like CSDR and I didn't even finish the vid that PFH posted here. But no, I had to spend time in oral program and then mainstream before I went to VSDB and then MSSD. One thing about CSDR, the buildings don't look ancient like the ones at VSDB. I think Byrd Hall is ready to collapse.

Yes I do not know him. My old classmates and the kids I lived with for few years, none of them are teacher at CSDR. Only one I know of is a counselor at dorm. It bothers me alot because my time, they did not do good job with us and held us to lower education. I am hoping new CSDR with better teachers and better ASLers do well with today kids.

I was put in oral program at 3 till 8 then oral program changed into TC with a deaf teacher (she was only deaf teacher I had and she taught me sign language) then I went to CSDR from 9 and half till 12. I shared with some older members years ago about it here on AD.

They look same as back in 70's except for high school and I heard from others saying about middle school are different too. I hope they do not have any more cockroaches. I used to be afraid go to bed at night because they put me right next to bathroom ( too many bugs there) I got anxiety at night and afraid to go to bathroom because of cockroaches. One night I went to bathroom few time during the night and I got in trouble. The night counselor made me to sit in the living room at midnight till 4 am. I was tired at school next day. I was very depressed and homesick. My mother will never do that to me because if I get scared at night she would let me to come in bed with her sleep in her bed then I feel safe and secured but at the dorm, no no so for that I got punished because I was afraid of cockroaches. Little kids should never live in dorm till they are teenagers. That is how I feel. Kids belong to parents not dorm counselors. High school and middle school kids can handle themselves without parents.

Then again jazzy, I think you have to understand that in your generation the mainstream didn't have the flaws that it has now. Back then the mentality in the mainstream was that the kids in the mainstream were SMART. Now, b/c most kids are mainstreamed they're basicly lumped in with general sped kids, and aren't really given a chance to really achieve.

Yes I have notice this here on Ad and I was shocked by how they were unhappy at mainstreamed. My mom knew how to fight this and got it for me and all others kids who went there before and after me. But my mother created this program died years later. Here we have good program for deaf/hoh kids, still with interpreters.

What's the youngest you think a kid should be in the dorm? I agree with you overall. I think the dorms are best for fourth grade and up. Little kids are a bit more sketchy, hell i was horrified when friends told me that there were four year olds in the dorms when they were in the dorm.

Do I know her? unless she got in CSDR in high school later part in 70's. I left there in 1973.

Her name is Lori (I dont know wht her maiden name was back then)

Well a regional dhh program can be decent. I support those 100%... I mean I think with all the debate, we need to acknowldege that we need a contimum of placement.....and I think we need to be VERY VERY careful not to assume that a solotaire neighborhood school placement is always The Best One. It really seems like the attitude that a solotaire placement is the best, dates back from the OLD OLD days when the education at Deaf schools was extremely watered down.

I started 4th grade at CSDR and I think age is still too young. It should be around 6 or 7th grade for kids to live at dorm. Deal with bullies from older kids in the dorm and some of them were already u know puberty but not all of us were there yet.

I lived in three dorms and last dorm I lived before I left in 73 was Rubioux 3. :)

Here in this area, we have two deaf teachers at elementary and one deaf teacher at high school, some kids will stay in DHH classroom while other kids will go in regular classes with intrepters. I have no idea how skilled their intrepters. Problems are the parents, lack of communication with their deaf kids put stress on those teachers. This is story I heard from my deaf friend who work there as TA. Every year is different so I have no idea about this year.
