When you ride on an airplane, do you hear the wings cutting through air, or do engine get in the way?

Can you describe it to us deafie on how it sound like? I'm an avid aviation by heart, currently a student pilot and always have been wondering on what it *sounded* like. The scratching of air, mechanical turbulence and all that.

It is like storms as if rains is engine the windows rattling is caused by winds pressure. hope that describe good enough? I am sure turbulence is like a pocket of stationary air that is not moving.. ?

Interesting. There will ALWAYS be a gap between hearing and deaf worlds.

hmm.. will cochlear implant work on deafies with severed auditory nerves (130+ db loss)?

severed = broken is that what you mean?

If that's is yes, no ci will not work, it need intact auditory nerve for it to work.
see this link: http://www.iurc.montp.inserm.fr/cric/audition/english/pathology/fhcpath.htm
see the first picture under the title: "Loss of IHCs and OHCs: complete deafness"
and read the caption beside the picture.

Wow, most excellent thread! I'll make sure Fragmenter sees this so it will give him an idea of what my grandson will experience after his CI surgery next month. And it is helping me a lot to understand this new experience since I've never really heard anything.
Want to thank you all for your accounts -- and Boult -- wow! Thanks for being SO descriptive of all those sounds you heard and I'm sure that wasn't even half of it.

This really is a great thread. It helps me understand the experiences my daughter will have if she gets an implant. I assume it will be different for her because she won't really be able to describe what she is hearing and also if she heard anything during this hearing aid process. Even if she gets implanted at 2, I don't think she will be old enough to describe sounds before getting implanted. Does that make sense?

So in your case, hearing aids don't work either right? Was this something you were born with?
No, was born hearing, went thru spinal mengitis and destroyed my auditory nerves. 130+ db is something that hearing aid couldn't help.

It is like "describe what it is like to see" :)

Yep, it's broken, wayyy broken. Oh well.

Thanks.
other alternative is ABI (Auditory Brainstem Implant ) which bypass the need of the ear system. (outer/middle/inner) and directly attach to the auditory nerves. check them out via google result: http://www.google.com/search?num=10...q=ABI+Auditory+Brainstem+implants&btnG=Search

it is least common here in USA but ideal for those with no ear or severely ossified cochlea and severed auditory nerve connection.

I am sure you wouldn't want that. :)

So vibrataticle doesn't help you hear any either?

From what I am seeing that seems to be so common. My daughter is deaf due to Connexin 26 gene. This is all new to me, and I know very little about all this, but I am learning. Does anyone know of anyone who had Connexin 26 and couldn't get an implant because of something else in the ear? I hear that most people that have Connexin 26 do not have anything else that would cause them to not be able to get an implant. Thanks.

Oops.. off topic.

Crickets making sound at nights?

Dripping facuets?

Sounds that turns you on, turns you off, offends you or make you crazy?

Well, these sounds can really annoy and/or drive me crazy. The only consolation is that I can turn it off!!!!

Toilets flushing especially in public facilities
Really loud trucks
Leaf blowers - one of the most obnoxious sounds...Grrr
Weedwackers especially gas powered ones
Mowers - I never mow with my CI on...I get too sweaty and the noise
Hair dryers
Bathroom/Kitchen fan vents
Some but not all water faucets
Some vacuum cleaners
Places that echo noises...can be very difficult or impossible to understand speech.
Certain mufflers on cars and motorcycles (those that sort of amplify the engine noise) - I like the Harley sounds though

This is what we have -- Connexin 26 -- Gallaudet told us it is the most common cause of deafness -- and my grandson is getting a CI at the end of next month. My son will be tested soon to see if he is eligible also.

That is cool! Fragmenter is sure to sit up and take note of that last one! He's been crazy about motorcycles since he was a toddler. LOL

Can you really tell the difference between gas and electric weedwackers? Wow!

Oh yes. There is a definite difference in the sound of a electric vs gas powered tool. Generally speaking, a gas powered tool is always louder. The electric weedwacker is more civilized in the noise department. It is a more subdued noise and very tolerable one at that.

It is very difficult to describe a Harley sound (very distinctive) to somebody who has not heard before. They are usually set up to accentuate the piston strokes particularily when the piston fires. So, it is sort of bang/bang/bang but not necessarily too loud (they can be though depends on the bike :D )until you pour the juice. Of course, the faster they go the louder they can be and the incidents of the bang/bang/bang sounds is closer together because the pistons are moving faster. Most non-Harley types don't accentuate the piston sound so much and they while can be loud the sound is different. I just always like the sound of Harleys but they can be LOUD!
