This thread is for those who are Cochlear Implants Users, I would like to know after your activated, What sounds have you heard from that day on and forward? Please be honest too. Thank-you! ;)

*Previous Cochlear Implants Users can also post their experience as well too.*

THe first thing I heard after getting my CI activated was myself peeing  I was looking around to see where it came from and realized it was peeing. :giggle:

Later on, I heard paper crackling - I didnt realize how much noise paper make.

But best of all, I was startled to hear my daughter's voices. I could tell the differences between them and how I could enjoy music more.

It is not like my hearing was restored 100 percent but it has given me so much more than I had with my HAs.

The longer I use my CI, the more I am able to understand conversations without looking at the talker's face.

It just doesnt happen quickly overnight - it takes time for my brain to recognize sounds. But it has really really helped me understand hearing people better - I dont have to strain to lipread - listening to them helps me reduce eye strain on trying to read their lips.

It really has improved my life :)

Thanks for sharing your experience, Gemtun. I find your post to be interesting in reading.

And Boult? Where are you? It's your turn. I want to hear about how you heard the cow 'mooing' for the first time.

I'll let you know tomorrow as that is when I'll be activated and will try and describe it as accurately as possible. I've been told to expect that it will sound terrible to begin with so my expectations are low.

Okay, I guess it is my turn...

First day
Let me see...when I got hooked up my own voice was incredibly loud to the point that I had to whisper. I could understand my audi, my wife and son. I couldn't understand my daughter until a couple of days later (she was higher pitched at 4 1/2). As we left the building, I could hear the cars and trucks and they were way too loud. I remember listening to my wife's side of the conversation (actually understanding her without looking at her while I was driving) when talking to my mom and my mother-in-law. Most of the noises were somewhat confusing that day. We went to a Golden Corrall and noises from eating (silverware, plates, cups, etc) drove me crazy. I heard the music but it wasn't real clear to me at that point.

Second day
I put it on and went downstairs and couldn't figure out what I was hearing. It was the refrigerator as I went into the kitchen. At work, I had no problem listening and understanding any person there. In fact, I was speaking to one person who had a pitch that drove me nuts when I had a HA and I was getting him 100% with no stress.

Later on, I started using a phone the third or fourth day and even talked to my brother for 1/2 hour on the cell phone five days after hookup. I had most of the noises identified in the first four days. I took me a while to get used to the loudness of vehicles (I think it took two or three months). The oddest noise to me was thunder. It was so much more richer than with my HA.

As I got better and better with it in the first couple of weeks, I found I no longer needed to lipread anymore, could hear in the dark, hear around corners carrying conversations. In fact my coworkers kept "testing" me to see if I would hear them in other cubes. That was fun catching them at it. :D

I admit it seemed easy to me but I do want to point out that I was also in a study so I had to adjust to all kinds of maps (programming) while adjusting to the CI. I would say the that speech was the easiest part while the general noises took a little longer. Why it was that easy? Good question... I guess I have an affinity for spoken languages and figuring out what I hear. Your guess is good as mine.

Tomorrow!! Time flies... well, unless you're awaiting hookup...

Good luck!

He will hear your farts. Be careful !

my first day druing the hook-up i thought it was easy and simple while doing the test for low beep sounds and etc.. once its turned on for surround sound i was lost and confused.. i remember asked the audiologist " why am i hearing weird sounds that i never hear before that's really annoying" those sounds is from the computer fan running, A/C running, etc in the room.

when i went outside.. its very noisy.. hearing cars, traffic lights, bikes, everything u can list.

was not used to it for few couple days.
also was a bit dissapointed.. didn't hear the birds signing, and few other quiet or high pitched sounds.

every noise i heard i can't recionize what it is till i see it and i know it.

now i can hear the birds singing, water running, car turn single. and many other quiet sounds.. but am noticing that i'm ingoring couple sounds which i'm trying not to  which is like car turn signal, seat belt beepings, etc.. i wanna hear that so it makes me aware its on and perfect :D

Cheri- why is that you want to know their experiences? Are you thinking of getting CI? i wonder? :)

Cheri and CI... That would surprise me.

But the questions she asks are excellent since they give feedback from actual users.
No discussion possible.

I enjoy reading your experiences. Gives me a small look into the hearing-world of my daughter.

Thanks all..

Wow that's quite an experience you all got there!

Are you able to hear the difference in voices as if someone is lying, hiding or feeling love?

*ahem* moan of pleasure? *ahem* Do it provide you more feedback during the lovemaking process?

Crickets making sound at nights?

Dripping facuets?

Sounds that turns you on, turns you off, offends you or make you crazy?

To all,

This is NO place to argue.

The topic is "*Cochlear Implants Users*", not "What is your opinion?" or similiar.

This thread is to ask CI users questions about what they experience, how they think and things like that.

If you disagree with CI, then DO NOT post anything in here.

Thank you,

Scott

Yeah, it is... to hear the rich details than I can with hearing aid. It is not about "oh i heard that" regardless of how it sounded. for example I heard the water from the sink faucet but louder and coarse than I heard with my hearing aid. that's why you have seen some audio descriptions of sound like *water swishing* I pour water, I can hear hitting the bottom of glass and filling. but with HA, too soft to notice that. but that's me because my audiogram chart show my HA is at 50 to 70db so can't get up to 20-30db where my CI is at now. I am working to get it up to 10-20 pretty much close to human's normal average hearing level. the 20-30 level already cover all of the lings sound (speech sounds) plus bird's sound. at 50-70db I can't hear those birds sound unless bird is up close to me like petting zoo or Pet store so that's different story.

I haven't mastered that yet. if you mean speaking under breath? by real live human, not yet. but heard that on tv since tv volume is kinda louder than that you know?

LOL, I will let you know when it comes to that. considering that I am single right now.

no crickets here.. but will let you know when I encountered one...

I don't have leaky facuets in here. but will let you know if I comes across one. but I could make it "leaky" and test myself. I am sure I will hear it.

crazy: fridge sounds and computer fans so I have TV on or music playing to mask that sounds :)
crazy: next door's shower running which I can hear thru the duct but louder in my bathroom in the morning. I ought to inform the rental apt about that eh...

anything else? any question about my list above in my previous post?

 thread here.

I hope you don't think my question is dumb...

Do you heard "love-making" with type of moan from next door or wall?

Watch out, Cheri, Boult might hear your "pee" ... :giggle:

Well, I haven't heard them yet, cuz the tenant on other side of my bedroom wall doesn't seems to be a young wild couple eh. oh well eh. They seems to be very quiet though...

I haven't heard lady "pee" yet.. cuz I can't walk into ladies' restroom. I had female visitors to my apt but I do not want to sneak in there to hear that LOL.
but I could hear them flushing when I am in living room so I know she/he is coming out.

I can tell you that when I go to bar on social event that have a live DJ., I couldn't hear them 'urinating' in the bathroom because of musics but I could hear them talking because they have to talk louder due to music. *shrug* I'll tell you next time when I happen to be in a quiet eating place that happens to have several males in men's bathroom, I'll let you know.
