Cochlear Implant

I thought the word "critical" was a negative word which making judgments.

My apologies. :Oops:

Apologize has been accepted *kidding* . Tousi was right. I'm not a native English writer so there may be some confusions at times.

Cheri, :wave:

I thought the same thing as you did, I think it's time for us to go back to school :|

{Cautiously bringing head out of hole looking both ways...}

There is always the dictionary...:whistle:

{Ducking quickly back into hole...}

It's funny - from your user name I thought you might be Scottish. So what is your native language?

How many people here are thinking about getting cochlear implant ??

I'm just curious cat here.

I am undecide that one, afraid it may not work on me since someone with CI told me it won't work on me. I never wear HA cuz I am way too deaf to hear it. Afraid it may damage me somewhat after saw this deaf man with CI paralyzed his half of face. Fear keep me from getting it. Sometime I want it then other time I do not want it.

Wonder if you are talking about the same guy I know that got half-paralyzed from getting his CI? This guy was actually the first person I knew to get the CI and that was what had turned me off -- BUT that was a long time ago and technology and medicine has gone a long way since so there should be no fear of paralyzing now.

From what I understand, CI helps people who are "way too deaf" like you, me, Fragmenter and his son? Won't hurt to get tested and see if you are eligible -- you can always turn it down if you ultimately decide not to go with a CI. Fragmenter got tested and was told he is eligible for a CI but he decided to hold it off for the time being. BUT he knows he is eligible.

Yes as Greema said with the early CIs there was more of a problem with facial paralysis. However in surgeries now they use computers that ensure that your facial nerve is not touched in surgery. In my surgery they taped electrodes to different areas of my face so that they could track any potential problems on the computer. I can still remember being wheeled into surgery and thinking to myself that the operating theatre looked like a spacecraft with all the computers everywhere! Facial paraylsis now is very rare fortunately.

I don't think it's fair for the person with the CI to tell you that it won't work on you just because it didn't work for him. Every person is very different pre implantation and post implantation and no one knows for sure how exactly it will turn out for every person although they do know that some factors e.g. being born hearing and previous use of hearing aids significantly increases the likelihood of success. Plus if your friend received an earlier model of CI with fewer channels then again that can influence the outcome compared to someone else who gets a different CI further down the track.
