zebadee2010, How did your surgery went on the 14th Dec? Just wondering.

As an avid daily" lap" swimmer I would never wear my Implant- swimming. What does one expect to hear while swimming? Nothing. conversely I don''t consider getting "practice being deaf" either by disconnecting- a suitable reason . More practical, fiscal reason-why damage your Implant and have to pay for replace it ? As I put my implant on when I awaken and just forget it through the day- have to make sure it to take it off at the pool in put in the special case- had to create a new habit. The same applies to taking showers at home.
Seems to be a non brainer to me. Survived 3 1/4 years so far. No damage.

do you think It would be a good idea to get mine insured???

Personally i feel that if your using it in water insurance probably wouldn't cover it.. just my thoughts..

I'd talk to your Audie(s)& surgeons about what kind of insurance to get etc ...as they will be very familiar with that process

That being said, considering the out of pocket cost of replacing the processor once it's out of warranty - I would !!

That being said - make sure that you are well informed about what the insurance covers so that you can be certain it includes "theft, loss & accidental damage (including water damage) ...the key word there being ACCIDENTAL.

Regarding even thinking of wearing the CI in the water such as a shower, pool, lake, ocean, river etc ...all I can say is I hope you have a LOT of money that's just "burning a hole in your pockets" because there's no way that warranty or insurance is going to cover you INTENTIONALLY drowning the equipment/causing water damage (having dealt with 'what is an accident vs what is abuse in terms of warranty claims myself for years - we used to say "once is an accident, twice is carelessness - but the third time is intentional damage/improper care/willful mis-use" warranties are intended to cover manufacturing defects or known "weaknesses" in the product that are NOT preventable with normal use (ie a fragile connection between the headpiece/magnet and cable) but is NOT intended to cover damages due carelessness, willful neglect, improper use, improper storage/protection from elements etc. While some manufacturer warranties will cover "total no-questions-asked replacement" for a limited time - this does NOT equal permission to abuse the product (the manufacturer realizes that in the first few weeks/months you might make innocent/ignorant mistakes that accidental damage the unit - aka FORGETTING to remove it before jumping in the shower etc).

Likewise insurance on the CI (processor/s) would cover accidental damage, loss, theft etc ...but isn't going to replace the processors once every 3-24months because you intentionally mis-used the product (you have to fill out a report on what happened, your CI audie would have to submit that the damage is consistent with what you reported happened etc ...and if ANYONE lies about how the unit was lost/damaged etc that is insurance fraud!)

Use and "misuse" really depends upon which processor you have. Some are designed to be splashed and submerged in water, covered by full warranty by the company whether intentional or not.

As posted earlier, surgery went really well. More or less pain free! ( Had Iv problems so when they tried to inject anesthesia it stung a bit. They just started a new IV and i was knocked out!) Other than that The pressure band hurts a bit after surgery. Mine was removed the next day. And for the first couple of days it is kinda sore. With the occasional ringing of the ears if you stress it too much or if you cough or something. Its been a week and 2 days since surgery. I had the steri-strips/dissolvable stitches removed the other day. It's healing over well and there is pretty much no pain now. As others have said what little pain you have can be managed by Advil or tylenol..

its been really good though. It's getting activated January 6th and 7th. So i'll post more then on my initial results as well as any further discoveries i find.

Thats great. Glad to hear that. Good luck for it. I recently qualified for a second implant and the surgery date is on 27th January 2011. I am looking forward to hear with 2 ears.

After reading on here about stem cell research i'm trying to decide if i want to hold out on the second one for that. But i don't know if its the hairs in my ear or not..? I can't hear what the doctors are saying so i'm kinda clueless as to what actually happened..

What's your hearing loss in your other ear? Is it profound? severe, etc?

And do you have any hearing without the hearing aid in your other ear?

Or what about having an hearing aid in your 2nd ear? Has that possibility been explored?

At the doctor they said my left cochlea is cracked. they are hoping in another 6 months or so it might be good enough for an implant.

Hearing in completely non-existant ever with any device..

They tried hearing aids on my at the audiologist and said they had no benefit..

And i have a cochlear implant already put in my right ear, still waiting on it to get activated. and as for my left ear i don't know what will happen with it.

It may be that once my cochlea heals that hearing comes back in that ear (i'm doubtful) but it is a possibility. But if not i may just get another implant.

I like to take full advantage of all my senses!

PFH- from past experience- your head has to heal from the surgery usually 4 weeks-at least that what happened from mine. Motivation as such doesn't enter the picture. I asked when could I go swimming-had to wait 2 weeks-after the operation. Lifting weights over my head-wait 2 months-danger of splitting the stitches. The doctor can tell you-I know-I asked!

So it's impossible to get activated like... the next day?

Yes basically. You have too much swelling and scars are still scabbing and such.

But they did tell us i could be activated two weeks early. So i haven't lost my motivation.

My friend got activated the next day. Talk to him if you wish, Mister Potts.

You make no sense.
Why not say you can get activated the next day?

I would say its not recommended to be activated the next day. Most people are probably in too much pain to bother trying to hear anyways. It's also a two step process.

Most people apparently wait about 5 weeks..

I pretty much said that... here..

But yeah..

PFH: here of course are actual people who have had the operation- usually skull healing time 4 to 6 weeks. One is actually not awake during the operation. Easy to key almost instantaneous recovery- in reality-much different.

Instantaneous recovery and activation-in reality-much different.

It's usually a month, some 2 weeks, Vivie from Greece was activiated 5 days (I think) post implant.

I waited 5 weeks whilst some people who is at same centre as mine waited between 2-8 weeks. Mine was 5 weeks due to short of staff over summer holidays.
