Once again, a 5 year old child does not have the capability to discriminate between deaf and Deaf. Therefore, she cannot willingly ID as something she cannot even define. She may be able to define deaf, but she cannot define Deaf. I know you think your child is brilliant, as all parents do, but she is still a 5 year old child and not a 25 year old adult.
Once again, the hearing bouncer of Deaf Culture checks my child's ID and this time determines she is now too young to enter -- and the appropriate age for entry is 25?
Get over yourself. My daughter is Deaf and wears CIs. The only place that's a conflict is in your head and on this forum, in threads where you love promoting an imaginary division between being a part of Deaf Culture and wearing an assistive hearing device.
I have to side with you here. I do not think age matters at all. I do believe your daughter understands she is Deaf and proud to be! You seem to be a wonderful mother!
Would you guys say a child who grew up CODA (both parent Deaf) didnt understand the culture? Its about how the child is raised and it seems GrendelQ's daughter is already a part of our culture.
Sure she is young and still has much to learn, but so do many adults here and you still welcome them. Please extend this to them, she is being a great mother and allowing her daughter to be a part of this when most parents today do not!
Shoshana!
Someone here always seems to think I'm stepping on her private domain. I'm not saying I'm one of those culturally Deaf hearing people, as Jillio very justifiably is -- I've a long, long way to go. But my daughter most definitely is Deaf.

The word from pfh: if " child" knows only ASL/BSL/Auslan etc. doesn't seem to "square with the observation of Jillio" re: "child unable to discern: deafness/hearing" under unspecified age. Is this a intermural discussion amongst "deaf militants:ideological gnostic segments ?
Shouldn't one appear to read actual comments here- without a reality check required?

OMG. That was too funny.
Sure, a 5 year old may not understand yet on the deepest level what it means to be Deaf. They sure are capable of knowing that they are Deaf, and that it has different implications than if one were to be hearing. A 5 year old has the ability to know that ASL is not the language used for the masses, but it's the language used that is most accessible to them.
5 year olds (generally) are not stupid- they get it. Good for Grendel's daughter that she's already started to form her true identity. It's a process that does not happen overnight.
So yes, Grendel's daughter appropriately ID's herself as Deaf. Why in the world would anyone challenge that?
Well, I know why. But that's just goofy.
