Chrysler recall controversy: What's next

There are many suvs with that position gas tank like my older xj one of the most popular cars of all time and many of them have plastic gas tanks. I'm not saying there might not be something to it but i'm skeptical.

whatt's next?

how about Durex Recall controversy LOL
THAT would be very entertaining, just imagine the statistic of 'accidential baby booms' and the suing and all
just imagine that

Too bad Chrysler had molested Jeep way too much. It is no longer real Jeep. Sad!

New Jeep Cherokee.... Wait! Let me get the bag....:barf:

phew, feel better already.

The longer Chrysler refuses to do those recalls, the more the values of those ZJs will plummet down. They'll probably be worth its price in scrap when Chrysler is ready to do recalls.

that's why I buy and drive only Japanese vehicles

Do you considered Mazda as Japanese automaker?

I know Mazda is under Ford but their office is located in Japan.

My 2005 Jeep Liberty Limited got sucked by Chrysler's refusal to recall. I do have gas filler spillout. Every time I fill the tank, it spits about 1/2 cup of fuel every time. My Durango just had fuel filler replace by recall last year. How it happened, the valve inside tank have a plastic valve that opens when fuel was being filled and closes when full to prevent it from backflow. They did not realized that 10% Ethanol had adverse effect on plastic that swells up, causing valve to get stuck open. They replace fuel filler valve with metal one that won't swell up. I called Chrysler about 2005 Jeep Liberty, they told me that Jeep have no recall so we got sucked by it. I just don't care and let it spill fuel until Govt tell Jeep that they must replace it or fined for Environment pollution.

As I looked under and can see plastic gas tank sticking out about 1/4 way from body. They could install metal brace or bar to protect tank. Plastic tank is better than metal tank that Famous Ford Pinto had which get punctured and explode.

My mom had 1979 Ford Pinto Super Sport. I drove it hard and did 70mph drifting at 2nd gear for 25 feet to left turn and felt a G-force when straightened up. I even slammed from Reverse to 1st gear real hard and axle spins reverse then suddenly forward. I was soo pissed at my Dad because he took my car title and refused to hand it back to me until the Toyota Corolla driver side bottom body rust to be fixed (it was the most stupidest move my dad made and I paid 100% on that car!!). Later, I returned. He continue to do stupid stuff then I threatened him that I will call cop. He threw my title back to me and I moved out. Month later I returned to pick up stuff from my parent's home and saw that Ford Pinto was propped on block without rear axle. I asked my brother what's happened. He said Engine gave out and was fixed then tranny gave out after that then fixed then lastly axle gave out and had to be replaced. It was my sweetest revenge I've ever had. I never mentioned to my brother at all that I did hard driving on Pinto  Luckily, I didn't have Pinto rear ended if I made a bad drifting..

I still have XJ, and I don't care about recall or losing value. My XJ is already at the point of where it isn't worth much regardless. But amazing, it still runs strong and don't give us any of single, even tweeny tiny headache at all. Also, we are retiring our XJ from long travel on freeway. So, now XJ stays in city where I live, and other vehicle that I am now using for long trips.
Planning to keep our XJ til we realize our engine or tranny was left 50 miles behind then we will get it to graveyard.

What mileage?

That sounds like a similar use to what was done with a regular pickup truck by the construction company I worked for as bookkeeper for many years. It was kept until it literally could not be fixed. It was more valuable as a backup and perk for employees than what they would have gotten out of it to trade in or sell. I was one of the ones that borrowed it when my car was in the shop or I had something larger to move.

Exactly, a very cheap back up. Can't beat car rental rates. Worth approximately two weeks of car rental cost. Also, prefer use that during snow where they put too much salt, My XJ does have few rust though holes. Not too severe but at least it runs. LOL

Yeah I drove it at both stages, almost new and about to quit. The first time I drove it it was almost brand new and we were switching who was going to be driving it so it was sitting at a time when my car was going to take another day for repairs to be finished. I got teased was I going to buy one because I came back liking it. That was in the 1970s before they were so common as a family vehicle.

My xj is 17 years old and 210k roughly. Thing is still a rock. The xj has the same position tank as the grand. So do many other suv.

Long way. 4.0 Inline six cly may last around 300k mileage or more. Inline is almost two times longer than most V types.

Yea, they are pretty popular around here. We see lots with 250k 300k and more. Rust usually gets um before they die around here. I use fluid film and it helps a lot.

Well, you know Rochester NY always dump too much salt on road during winter time. I got several rust though holes already. Your indeed right about 4.0L last longer than V6. The engine seems to lose a bit of power. Still powerful and it runs just fine. I have no idea how long it will last, likely body will fall apart before engine dies. The AC was broken for long time. I thought I would trade so didn't bother fix AC. I should have, since I never thought I would keep my Cherokee that long. LOL I'm curious how long and likely will find out eventually.

Pretty low miles. My Mazda with inline four cyl is only 204k mileage and running smooth and quick.
