Can You Trust Audiologists?

My audie and ENT doctors are great! I had different audie in my life. I had been moved the cities a lot. I like my last audie than previous audie. I don't like my old audi gave me wrong earmolds what I wanted. I always tell to my audie what color earmold I want. I don't like the half shell. Because I have to get a new earmold every once years. It wasted my money. I am wearing a full shells for long last.

I didn't trust the first 2 I went to---> I started sneezing uncontrollably in their office and they asked why, and I told them I'm allergic to bullshit.

LMAO :D

Seriously, I do wish more audiologists would know at least some basic signs. While the last 2 audiologists I have been to were very nice, I am really deaf and depend largely on speech reading, so I wish they knew at least some basic signs. I know the majority of their clients are seniors who do not sign, but even one basic sign language class wouldn't hurt the audiologists. Or a private tutoring session learning audiology-related and deaf-related signs that would help us while we're in their office.

The ones Ive seen in the past seem to be pretty biased to the ha they carry.

What have been your experiences?

I don't trust audiologists much.. I know what type and brand of hearing aids and even adjustments . I chose the type and model of my hearing aids mostly on my own and wanted some adjustments

I had better luck with hearing aid dispensers than audiologists. I used hearing aid dispensers for many many years . When I went to get a CI evaluation, I made sure I had an audie that can sign somewhat ( two got fired for not knowing signs ). Yes anyone that work in the world of hearing loss should learn some signs. Or get out of the market and go sell used cars. As I always said. the ears belong to YOU. and YOU have to live with em day in and day out. So demand services till you are satisfied. And Always remember BUYER BEWARE.. includng hearing aids and assistive devices..

I think they talk more about their own hearing aids cuz they know their own hearing aids best.

That's why you should get more than one opinion or an opinion of someone who does not sell hearing aids. :dunno:

I did have a similar problem with an audiologist once, at NTID... but for CI, not hearing aids. I later found out that the audiologist had a "deal" with CI companies. If they refer students to get CIs, the school gets donations... which turns to the audiologist getting a bonus.

I thought NTID would be more professional than that! :eek2:

I used to go to a certain hearing aid shop for years until the guy retired and his son took over the business. I didn't like the son as he tried to push an hearing aid brand on me. I turn him down, saying that the sounds sound so muffled - not clear as my present hearing aids.

I tried the next hearing aid shop --- boy this one still call me every year to ask me to visit. Way too pushy. I didn't like the guy there but there was a woman who knew sign language who work there briefly.

The one I go now is fair. I am thinking of trying another hearing aid shop to see if I like them or not. I really don't like shopping around for a good earmold. I really hate going back for remake of earmolds over and over. I just want to go once and then pick them up and said "see you next year".

Get an opinion from someone who don't sell hearing aids??? My ex wear the in-the-ear hearing aid (the bigger kind, not the real small one) and he was telling me that I should get one like his. He doesn't really realized that I need powerful hearing aids. I can't believe that he would push this on me. I prefer to listen to an audiologist and try out several hearing aids like I had back in NTID.

I've been through a lot of audiologists in my life. Like some of you here, I've come across some real cowboys who tried to "sell" rather than get me a good fit. I remember asking one guy why he was recommending me a particular hearing aid and he couldn't answer the question - scary. However, there are good ones around, you just have to shop and ask others who have been there and done that.

My opinion as a general guideline, it's better to avoid hearing aid dispenser chains. I'm sure there are some good stores in a chain but since they rely on brand and a global marketing strategy many bad ones can "disguise" themselves. An independent practice has to work hard on the other hand to build up goodwill.

I don't trust anyone implicitly. If you make sure you are educated, then it makes it easier to work with an audiologist.

agreed! go do homework-plenty of sources, so that you are ready with questions and do not get distracted or mislead into other ideas. If they divert your questions into something they actually know avoiding your needs.......then head 4 door

I went to a different audiologist because I was chosen to get new hearing aids out of some grants.

Anyway, I met the audiologist. It was a place that I believe is for deaf people to get fitted. It was a well-known speech and hearing center. She introduced to me some new Phonaks hearing aids that is programmed on the computer kind of like cochlear implants. She was telling me how I was going to hear new things and my brain was going to be overwhelmed with new sounds.

Nothing new happened.

She made me an audiogram and did not give it to me that same day. She said she would mail it to me. She never did.

I never went back to her.

I went to my previous audiologist who referred me to someone who had the softwares to program my new hearing aids. Nothing new happened with the hearing aids.

I wondered if she was some audiologist who had a fake diploma.

I don't have CI. I was simply pointing out similarities with audiologists pushing hearing aids on their clients... but in my case, the NTID audiologists are pushing CIs to their clients. :)

I've gone thru 3 diff audis!
1st was a deuchebag and told me, in regards to my tinnitus and hearing loss, to "deal with it"!
2nd was at CHEO (childrens hospital of eastern ontario) and they didn't think my hearing loss should affect my daily life!...jerks
3rd is at Davidson Hearing Aid Centre! They are great audis there and I can always get in quick and easy! Plus they have a new location that is closer to my house, instead of downtown:)

I've often wonder the same. I have studied audiograms learned about them and come to learn from my own that audiologist do sometimes fudge on the numbers a lot.

When you find a good audiologist stick with him or her. Its like finding gold!

Anyway the last one was great and very compatible to younger clients with severe losses and cosmetic desires.

LOL :giggle:

Why do you think they sometimes fudge?
