Botte, you're missing that even back in the old days when Clarke was HUGE, (meaning they had a lot of kindergarteners in the dorms who stayed until 8th grade graduation) they still had a lot of kids who transferred in from public schools. Go and look at the old Volta Voices. They had ads in them heavily promoting Middle School at Clarke. I am speaking of THAT population. The reason why Clarke/St. Joseph's/CID had viable dorm programs until recently, is not b/c parents were sending their five year olds to live in the dorms.....but b/c so many kids were struggling in the mainstream and had to transfer. Nowadays, with the lack of private oral dorm programs, kids who are struggling in the mainstream if they are oral will have no choice but to attend a state deaf school.

Botte, I'm just saying that you're looking at this from one perspective. You are right yes.......but the reason that Clarke isn't the same as it was even ten or fifteen years ago, has to do with a lot of reasons. I'm not saying you're wrong....I'm saying that your reason is one among many. Do you see?
 
deaf schools are so unwanted these days, many deaf schools over here have shut down due to parents sending their kids to HIU units or mainstream schools. I believe deaf kids do need a school just for them like when I went to my school for the deaf. We even had to get an SEN(statement of special educational needs) to get me into the school. Now it is full of kids with special needs, e.g autism, behavioural issues, ,wheelchair bound, etc kids with other needs than deafness. it's just not on!!

Sounds like the Hampton School for the Deaf in VA. It originally was the black school for the Deaf and it is in Hampton VA. It's actually Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind but most just call it the Hampton school for the Deaf. When people talk about VSDB, they mean the one in Staunton, VA.

That's right. They really needed to revamp Hampton into a program for multihandicapped kids (meaning kids with severe mental handicaps) and put the deaf and blind multihandicapped kids there, as well as offer Early intervention/preschool/kindergarten and maybe early grades for "just" dhh/blind/low vision kids.

i didn't say that the mainstreaming was right or wrong, just that it was happening.

You are entirely correct. The newborn hearing screening has had a tremendous impact on children who are DHH and diagnosed early as a result of that. I've always said my son was lucky to be born when he was, because had he been born 1 year earlier he likely wouldn't have been diagnosed until he was older.

Early intervention through the schools, and the family being knowledgeable about their childrens needs early on has had a positive impact on these children.

Early detection is a great benefit to deaf children as they can begin education with early intervention and not have the huge delays in the past.

It doesn't need to have anything to do with becoming hearing like.

There are many interventions that are helpful that are just for deaf needs.

All Deaf schools are going to be closed in near future and nobody will care, anyway. They are going to reduce a lot of "abnormal" people, so you can't stop medical technology. There is nothing that we can do.

I think you may be reading more into it than was there. Bott did a good job describing what I was talking about. Early amplification can be a part of it, but my implication was not to "get them as hearing as possible". It was to address their needs, the number one need being an accessible language.

Edit to add: my point was (and I think FJ's point) was that these children are being identified earlier, so their delays aren't as bad as they were in a similar group say 20 years ago. The reason why is because ideally, their needs are being met through various ways.
