Yes, we know it is a serious problem but my question is..why is it finally taken seriously now? Why not back then? I was bullied to the point where I got so sick in my stomach every morning about going to school in middle school.

What happened to make the authorities take it more seriously? More suicides, more media exposure, the Internet, or Columbine?

Your thoughts?

No idea. Maybe part of it is b/c today's parents ideas of bullying/shunning are more in line with what today's kids deal with.
I think parents who grew up in the '60's and '70's still kind of have the idea that bullying/shunning is something that's mild. Like back then, there were some sociopathic/mean kids. (there have ALWAYS been bullies and mean kids after all)
It does seem to have gotten a lot worse. Maybe it's b/c of the superfical Stepford suburb phenonomon. So you have a lot of kids growing up thinking that the ONLY thing that matters is superfical acheivement. So you get a lot of narcisstic superfical kids, who in turn have such a poor sense of self worth that they feel the need to rilclide and severely bully other kids in order to feel "better about themselves"

Technology.

First come telegraphs, then come radios, then come TVs, then come fax machines, then come the Internet.

Easier it is for people to contact each others, the easier it is for bad things to be exposed through word of mouth.

I grew up in the sixties and seventies, and I assure you I don't think bullying is mild.

I was mainstreamed and every day was torture. To this day and I am over 50, I pretty much only communicate and socialize to my own family.

Norms change as society evolves. We are supposedly becoming more a more enlightened society and better aware of the effects of certain behaviors.

Botte, what I meant by that was the overall worldview of bullying. Yes, there were kids who got shit on, (as well as some SERIOUSLY sociopathic folks)but overall back then bullying was thought of as something not that serious.
It IS and WAS something serious....and it's not just perpetrated by seriously disturbed kids. Maybe too it's the Mean Girls phenonomeon too.

Yea i am thinking the same thing. Lots of parents can speak out more by reading on sites and researching how to deal with the bully issues. I hope it helps to reduce these bully kiddos toward to innocent kids.

I agreed, the action should have done long time ago. I don't forget Columbaine. These bullies are responsible for this.

Maybe back then, their thinking are that the children will be children and they will outgrow it????

Back in those days, it was all about "Boys will be Boys" or something like that. Now, they are considering passing like to make bully a crime.

I was bullied horribly and I was scared all the time, up til high school. I was bullied because I was in Ex. Ed, and understood things differently, hard time with speech for some years. Took me a long time to get past that but I have. But that's my perspective.

I wouldn't even bother with that. Doing so just means that you still allow them to influence you. They're not even worth the thought.

Problem is, under what context are we talking about? Mine versus yours.

What is Ex. Ed?
Sorry to hear of your troubles before. I was bullied in high school till one day I walked up to the biggest guy and punched him. I lost the fight but was never bullied again.

Kids were not hanging themselves in their bedroom when I was a kids! And we did not have the internet were you could be bullied 24/7 and have horrible thing posted about you! Kids can't get away from being bullied today! And a person can only take so much bullying before they snap and kill themself or the person bullying them! ,
