Brakessssssssssssss

That was totally reckless of your wife and you, you both put other drivers and their families at great risk ! There was a horrible accident in my city because the family allowed their 80 yo father to drive his car that had no brakes. And the old man end hitting kids and their parents that standing on the sidewalk. The man family knew the car needed work on it and did nothing .

HEY HEY... back up there buddy.... Not my vehicle and nothing I do will change her mind...
And if you read my first post, I FIXED IT ! but not without a battle with her first for 4 weeks ( her car/her insurance ) so don't accuse me or throw me in the fire.

No one should be shocked to find out how many unsafe vehicles are on the road.....Had a friend who drove on "bald" tires....said she could not afford new tires, so I told her to simply buy "used"...better than having a blow out....

But bad brakes are a different story....some places will check ur brakes for free. Perhaps living in the country with very little traffic is much safer than driving in the city with heavy traffic on bad brakes.

I was told that if ever my brakes went out....to slam the gear shift into park...and foot push the emergency brake....Feel it would ruin the transmission...but at least the car would stop...unless you were driving at a high rate of speed...and doing that might find urself going thru the windshield....even spinning and rolling over....hitting a tree or something....

Bad brakes are simply bad news!...Your wife took a very heavy risk at doing this...and her being the mother of your child!....Maybe she has a "death wish" or something....I dunno....

The parking pawl probably wouldn't catch if you put it in park while driving. If it did engage it would probably bend or break before it stopped you.

No need to stick a stick in a rats nest and stir it up, she can do that herself....lol
I didn't mean to do it to aggravate the wife but to make the roads safer for other drivers. Safety first.

I know what you meant, whatyasay is going a bit too far dragging me in as "being careless"

Then your wife is not too bright or just does not give a damn about other drivers .

Now we are on the same page. She is smart but just doesn't care.
I have tried numberous times to let me fix it but she kept insisting NO, The insurance of the driver who hit her will pay but they have been beating around the bush for almost 6 weeks now. Since she couldn't stop on time anymore she finally caved.

I wouldn't even get into a car without working brakes.

I cannot believe she kept going without brakes like that!

wow! I never seen it that bad..... I seen pads down to metal - but not to the point where it literally chews the caliper piston and change thickness on the rotor. I'm glad she changed her mind. Hopefully the evidence will convince her next time.

Yeah, I have seen worse than that. But that condition, should have fixed long time ago and it would cost much less than that.

I would not accept excuse for making somebody else pay due to accident, whenever it is safety related, don't wait, fix it and save the bill and hopefully get paid for. Still cheaper in the event when other party refused to cover.

Almost two years ago, customer brought her car to the dealership for change a oil. I drove her car to the shop and it was pretty strong smell of gasoline. So I checked around the engine and I found fuel leaked from the fuel pressure regulator. I reported to service advisor. Then service advisor explained to customer that fuel system need repair right away. The customer said NO! So I explained that fuel leak was very dangerous due flammable risk. Customer said NO! Just change a oil! So I talked to manger what's happen. The manger talked to customer then manger was very upset and told me let it go. Customer was out of mind.

I second that, and would rather refuse service to save my liability insurance rate, even my own business.

My response to her would be, we have to fix this serious problem before we can change oil, otherwise kindly find somebody else to do for you.

But wow, we got plenty of stupid customers out there. We taught them to be stupid so that they can sue companies during 70's and 80's. I hate these stupid people because they are the one who screws everybody up. Really SAD Sad!

I've been seen it before but I witnessed the inner pad in the front brake caliper was gone, the piston of the caliper bushed the rotor. Like I see them about 5 times in my mechanic years.

I wonder if my new hearing aid can actually hear break squeal? It had been hard for me to hear in the past.

For most new cars today, breaks last a lot longer than old cars. Still, you should always have them checked.

Not always, newer cars have short brake life than older vehicles. How do I know? I inspect the brakes and tires while oil services. Brake wears on German cars are more faster like in 6 months to year.....

My wife has been driving her van for a month now with no brakes, She finally agreed to let me fix them. Cost $350 to completely rebuild both front and new pads on the rears. The calipers got so hot the phynolic piston shattered and blew out the seals for a complete loss of fluid, then since one faild extra strain to the other prematurely wore it out and the rear brakes were barely doing their job under the extra stress. Enjoy...

These pics look like from Ford Windstar. I'm not sure.

He is right. Today brake rotors are "Throw away", when older cars brake rotor can be machine and reuse, thus they are tougher than today. Reason behind is that in order to save fuel, vehicles needs to be lighter, making rotor a "throw away" version would mean lighter for vehicles.

Which brake you talk about? Drum or disc? Most older cars use drum brake and most newer cars (not truck/suv) use disc brake.

Most disc brakes are short braking distance than the drum brake. That's why the disc brake worn out quick but easy avoid from an accident. The disc brakes are easy than drum brakes (hydraulics) for replace.

Believe or not, Air brake drums with RUST are EASY than disc brake and drum brake (hydraulics) for replace.

The drum brakes are better for heavy duty like towing and pretty last long.

What's the problem? That kind of money grows everyday on a tree in your backyard, right? ;) Just kidding.

Those old brakes look like a real mess...
