Well, I must miss that one...

Anyway I can relate about your mistrust of these online stores.

Now there's a book thread on AD! ;)

I do have many books that I have read plus great authors.

Right now I'm currently reading the biography of my fave genius...

and at the same time I'm attempting Leo Tolstoy's "War and Peace"....over 1,000 pages of reading pleasure...lol!

Now my book reading requirement is that any book I buy at either McKay's used book store or Books-A-Million have at least a MINIMUM of 500 pages so I can have the pleasure of reading something pretty long.

Also I do love historical fiction especially John Jakes' "Kent Family Chronicles" that is a total of 7 or so volumes long dating from the American Revolution to the post Civil War era. I finished reading Harry Turtledove's Alternate History series that presents a "what if" scenario in which the Confederates won the Civil War.

and Meg.....I envy your 2,500 book collection. I wish I could have kept my books together in one place!

Deaf258.... I love that idea of yours to give that book to a certain person lol!

Sable,

War and Peace is an awesome book!!! Let me know what you think after you finish reading it :)

I read a lot on Einstein's wife, Milvea Maric (a Serbian). It was very sad how she had to live in Einstein's shadow as she was a brilliant mathematican herself. She gave up her career to support Einstein.

Again, she reinforces one of my mottos " Behind every successful man, there is an even more successful woman." :thumb:

If you like long books check out James Michner or Jeffery Deaver. Michner (spelling)wrote "Centennial" and other historical novels. Deaver writes detective books (4-600 pgs). One of his books, "Bone Collector" was made into a movie with Denzel Washington. Lincoln Rhyme reminds me of Grissom on CSI.

funny that you should mention James Michener. I've read most of his books starting over ten years ago. "Centennial" was the first one I ever read from Michener, but my all-time faves from him is "Chesapeake", "Texas" and "Alaska" What is truly amazing about Michener is that he did not start writing until he was in his 40s! His characters and backgrounding of the stories made me think I was right smack deep into the story ;)

I hadnt had a chance to pick up "Bone Collector" yet but thanks for the heads up, john.......

James Michener is very good author. I read his books "Hawaii" and "Alaska"... I learned lot about the history, cultures, etc etc..

The recent thread by TTT regarding menstrual cycles got me digging up one of my favorite books, Red Tent, by Anita Diamant (which tells the little-known Biblical story of Dinah, daughter of the patriarch Jacob and his wife Leah and sister of Joseph - to be found in Chapter 34 of the Book of Genesis) to read again last night.

Red Tent was a term used for women menstruating and would gather in a large red tent for one week where they would just lay around, read, eat, sleep, pamper themselves or chat around with other women.

This book is awesome - if TTT ever comes across this post, she might want to read Red Tent to get a better understanding of how glorious menstrual cycles can be. Nowadays, women think it is a bothersome timing but it is really a timing for women to nurture themselves.

Meg....

That got me thinking, I think i will definetly buy a book maybe in few weeks to read Red Tent's..

Thanks,

Wendy

:bump: Note: These books are required anyone to have critical thinking skill to read...

Sleeping With Extra-Terrestrials : The Rise of Irrationalism and Perils of Piety
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=/ref=cm_lm_asin/102-9294953-8405746?v=glance

A politician armed with religion is a dangerous animal. btw, this book the Religious Right doesn't want you to read! Trust me. They doesn't.

Trust Us We're Experts: How Industry Manipulates Science and Gambles with Your Future
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=/ref=cm_lm_asin/102-9294953-8405746?v=glance

This is one of the reasons I encourage anyone to learn science (self-educated) and want a population of critically thinking voters.

Harmful to Minors: The Perils of Protecting Children from Sex
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=/ref=cm_lm_asin/102-9294953-8405746?v=glance

Politicians want children to think that pleasure from ANY form of sexual interaction is evil, deadly, etc. If you masturbated as a child AND didn't get hairy palms, you should read this book.

Scholarly World, Private Worlds
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=/ref=cm_lm_asin/102-9294953-8405746?v=glance

The book demands much from the reader, so if you don't want to think and question your own thinking, stay away 500 miles from this book.

Why Societies Need Dissent (Oliver Wendell Holmes Lectures)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=/ref=cm_lm_asin/102-9294953-8405746?v=glance

And once you learn to think for yourself, this book will give you the reasons to speak up!

I read all and plan to order some new books (mostly critical thinking subjects) today :D

I just finished the first Dune book. Boy, was that a good read! I've been reading Jurassic Park and found it very difficult to read. Very highly technical and detailed, way more than the movie. But I enjoyed it anyway.

Can someone recommend me a good science fiction book to read? Thanks!

Michael Crichton loves to add more details complicating the plot. But my favorite Michael Crtichton book is also his first one, "The Andromeda Strain" that is a blend of sci-fi, alternate history and suspense. It should be much simpler to read than Jurassic Park though.

If you want a weird sci-fi twist with history, I recommend Harry Turtledove's "World War" series in which aliens from outer space interrupts World War II forcing the Axis (Germany, Italy, Japan) and the Allies (USA, Britain, Russia) to unite with each other to fight the alien invaders......Really surreal lol!

Ive tried and tried to love science fiction books but unlike wines/cheeses/beers, I couldn't acquire a liking to that genre.

Hence I have no recommendations for any science fiction books :(

Michael Crichton's Sphere made my pants wet. Sphere is my number one favorite sci-fi book to read. Once I started reading this book and I couldn't stop turning the pages...

It will be nice to have that 'power'... Imagine.. our thoughts become reality in a matter of millisecond. nicee but naw. What if we have the nightmares which will come real... *shudder* or worse, ravensteve's thoughts... now that's scary.

I liked books written by Isaac Asimov. The Foundation series were interesting to read! It is about saving a huge galactic civilization from falling into the dark ages.
