Book - For Hearing People Only

The book For hearing people only 3rd edition costs $35.95 shipping $4.05. Seems to be reprinted columns explaining what "deaf culture" entails for hearing people. Can be used by teachers in class settings.

That is interesting according to the "clinical observations"of Jillio I have both a Superiority and Inferiority complex -at the same time.. Is this"new" psychology based on reading into anyone's computer comments within the context of one biases? Projection? Is this something new-computer psychologist?Does the real Dr Phil know about this?

Thanks to Jenniifers's AD comment duly passed on by PFH about deaf/Deaf person's ability to "spot B S".Right-Is there lots floating around here?

Nothing new at all. Many people present themselves as superior to cover over the feeling of inferiority that they have and are afraid others will see and judge them negatively. The bravado is really quite easy to spot. If you will recall, AD members have made references to just that very concept since you have joined the forum. The only person that doesn't seem to be aware of your issues is you. It is much easier to lie to yourself than others.:cool2:

The written word is a powerful means of communication, drphil, your choice of words and your writing 'style' can tell a lot about a person.

Correct. And it appears that drphil has communicated things to those on this forum that he is completely unaware of himself.

PFH as your "subtle understanding"-still trying to understand why you left me a You tube diatribe in ASL-when i previously mentioned I was ONLY a member of VampireFreaks.com and NOTHING else.
What was ambiguous about about being ONLY a member of VampireFreaks.Com?

Was your purpose to get me to join You tube? Do you get a commission for each new member?

The purpose was to show you that you are ASL impaired, and by being so, are missing out on a lot of information that could be useful to you in accepting and understanding yourself.

Some books I have read after deafness:
Life after Deafness Bena Shuster: Cdn Hard of Hearing Association 1995 Ottawa, Ont

Wired for Sound-a journey into Hearing Beverly Bidmerman Trifolium Books, Toronto Ont1998

Rebuilt-how becoming part computer made me more human Michael Chorost Houghton Mifflin, New York 2005

Seeing Voices a journey into the world of the deaf Oliver Sacks, University of California Press Los Angeles 1989.

Happy reading!

The first two are not about deaf culture. They are biographies of CI recipients. Not surprising that you don't grasp the difference.

Seeing Voices
is an historical account of the foundations of Deaf Culture. Imagine that! A HEARING neurologist who has shown that Deaf Culture exists. Guess it is a bit more than simply the over active imagination of a few, as you seem to believe.

Sorry, Loveblue. Looks like I was still off track. Didn't see your request until I had already replied.

Another book that I found very interesting was The Mask of Benevolence by Harlan Lane. It is full of examples of the ways in which the hearing have attempted, in well meaning ways, to "help" the deaf only to cause very negative results to their actions.

I wonder if it would be beneficial for someone to create a thread of helpful books for the deaf/hoh/and interested to read and make it sticky. You know, kind of like the thread I started on website for ASL or sign language lessons and help.

I know for me, it would be helpful, but I would also hate to clutter up with so many sticky threads, you know?

Well, you are the person to do it, and I think it would be helpful, especially for students.

I will go through all the thread and take down titles and such and work on it. Thanks for the vote of confidence. You are a truly terrific person and I appreciate it.

Should I put the post here in "Our World Our Culture" or in Deaf Education"? I am currently putting it together.

Jillio: you don't appeared to have actually read the 3 books mentioned. All 3 do in fact talk about "deaf/Deaf culture". Though in different ways.

Wired for Sound- pages 113-133

Life after deafness- 7,23,109-110. definition 9

Rebuilt "deaf community"-definition 9. future of 134-137,144' perception of "normal hearing person-132, race and socioeconomic demographics (US) 135-36, sense of community 121-123.127-128 VS Oralism 120-122,127, 130-135,137.
"Cultural genocide" 130-131. 153.

Rebuilt's author-Michael Chorost is American-references American while Life after Deafness and Wired for sound- authors-Biderman & Shuster are Canadian-references Canadian.

All 3 authors do in fact have Cochlear Implants.

Sacks book is entirely different than the above 3.

I vote for "Our World Our Culture".

Okay - I have it ready to post. I have taken book titles that came up regarding Deaf Culture and included names of all authors as listed by Amazon.com
So far, there are 12 on the list. It should be a good start, right?

Great start. I thought of one more and put it in your thread. :)

Can anyone answer my question?

I actually have a question. Anyone know how long they usually take to ship? I ordered this book almost a month ago (off the site in the OP), and I haven't gotten any word of its shipment and no money has been taken off my $50 Mastercard gift card. I'm tempted to order again (my dad thinks the order might not have gone through), but I don't want to accidentally buy two.
