BBC NEWS | Europe | Biofuel use 'increasing poverty'

The replacement of traditional fuels with biofuels has dragged more than 30 million people worldwide into poverty, an aid agency report says.

Oxfam says so-called green policies in developed countries are contributing to the world's soaring food prices, which hit the poor hardest.

The group also says biofuels will do nothing to combat climate change.

Its report urges the EU to scrap a target of making 10% of all transport run on renewable resources by 2020.

Oxfam estimates the EU's target could multiply carbon emissions 70-fold by 2020 by changing the use of land.

The report's author, Oxfam's biofuel policy adviser Rob Bailey, criticised rich countries for using subsidies and tax breaks to encourage the use of food crops for alternative sources of energy like ethanol.

"If the fuel value for a crop exceeds its food value, then it will be used for fuel instead," he said.

"Rich countries... are making climate change worse, not better, they are stealing crops and land away from food production, and they are destroying millions of livelihoods in the process."

Let's feed other humans, but only after we fill up our tanks.

Cant have it both ways. Its help the planet or help ourselves. And personally the earth is overcrowded in my opinion anyway yeah...

planet > earth.

biofuel is a mistake. FIND ANOTHER SOLUTION!

Use people's bowel movements from all over the world for gas. Why not ?

If they want biofuels, they should use plants we can't eat by using the cellulose in the plants that we can't digest anyway to make the fuel or use the waste parts of the plants we do eat to get the cellulose.

Biodiesel is made out of the old cooking grease/oil from restrants,
they should use that instead of throwing out all that cooking oil
just because you can't cook with it anymore, should use it for
something not throw it down the sewer.

I agree! why not, but the only downside it absolutely stinks like a chip shop! :giggle:

I'm sure there are a lot of other stuff we can recycle for fuel.

Can the humans adapt in a failing environment? I think not. The environment deserves every bit of effort to be honored and saved for future generations.

Stop thinking of instant gratification. People WILL adapt to whatever positive change the environment may make from their pro environment action. End programs and conditioning that are dependent on use and production of oil. Think of the bigger picture in the long run. Things will always get better and better if you get from A to B. Eventually the best solution will be found.

Let's open up more oil wells, and build new refineries. The oil is there--we just need to get it.

BTW, if petroleum is really the "leftovers" from deceased dinosaurs, then that would be a "biofuel", would it not? :D

Yeah they gave old cooking oils to anyone who will use it for biodiessel.

It won't last long, people are not ready for change.

Time for us to learn to use different kind of energy for our needs.

It wouldn't make gas price goes down, you are struck with $4 and above.

Like I said in other thread, drilling isn't answer because USA has low number of domestic oil reserve when compare to other countries, especially in Canada and Saudi Arabia, if domestic oil is run out then you will struck with import oil again.

I'm flavor into new energy source to replace the oil, oil will become more ridiculously expensive in future due demand/supply from China and India.

Yup, gotta agree, it will last at less than 5 years for domestic oil in USA if completely or major part of replace on import oil.

Not hard to predict that gas price will be $5-$6 per gal in 2009.

I agree with u here, we have been trying to change for years and now it is getting worst.

Yeah it is going to be very hard for everyone.

Yup, oil refineries in CA is already exceed the demand and wouldn't able to get more oil to support an massive population.

There's natural gas and hydrogen station in CA, even you can buy natural gas based car or hydrogen based car if you can afford it.

Back in 80's I read something about this a man who invented back in 1900's by using light without using oil on cars and the oil companies stopped him. The invention was lost forever. I did not realized how greedy big corprations we have in our country and around the world.

People keep coming to California, demand more oil, water and land to live on. Yes we do have natural gas and hydrogen station here in my area but right now I am not ready to buy a new car. Not sure about the future if the cars are worthy to buy.
