Actually netrox - you're correct that slaves had no say in the matter but slave children were not always taken from their parents...slave owners see the children as yet more free labour for the plantation and would sell them only if they wanted the money. It is true that nowadays, a black child is more likely to be born into a single parent household and be raised by a single parent than a slave child way back when.

And they were better off being slaves.. yep.

That's not what they're saying at all. They are saying it's sad a slave child had more of a chance to be born into a two parent household and be raised by two parents than the modern day black child in 21st century America.

Generally, the ones that were sold off the quickest were the ones that were fathered by the slaveowner as a result of rape. They sold them off very quickly, often with the mother, as well, to avoid being reminded of their crimes, or because the slaveowner's wife detected, in the child's appearance, a resemblance to her husband, and demanded they be sold.

Interesting. Like Martha Washington, perhaps? There were rumors her old man George died as a result of syphilis, so it is possible. :|

Yeah. Apparently it was a wide spread and generally accepted practice.

White slave owners having sex with black female slaves was actually rather common and yes, acceptable (to white people). Just means free sex and more free labour. The kids would be sold off if it was reflecting the white family in a very bad light but many white wives turned a blind eye.

Everything that I have read and looked up says that is a myth. There is no medical evidence, nor any symptoms to support that fable.

Yes, many did as they felt it saved them from the distasteful activity of having to have sex with their husbands.

Then many wives also became jealous, and demanded harsher treatment of the offspring known to be their husband's progency.

Logical conclusion, though, given there were few who did not engage in sexual activity with their slaves. I mean, look at the rambling nature of politicians in general.

Yeah, I know. That is why I said "rumors." The way I see it is: if there's smoke, there's fire. :dunno2:

Anyone can start a rumor, even without any "smoke." It's especially hard for someone to defend himself after death.

If he had syphilis and died from it, how come he never displayed any symptoms of the disease?

Do you know exactly who and when this rumor started? Did anyone ever present any evidence?

Logical conclusion of what? Symptoms? Contemporary writings? Did all male slave owners die of syphilis? I don't see any logic at all.

The pledge is all kinds of absurd, even though they recently removed that dumb slavery wording it's still an unrealistic and telling move. It basically is a statement like: "I know I'll never win the nomination after this stunt, but the one who does needs to see that some people support ideas like this and start socially leaning to the right."

Of course you don't.

Oh boy. I just googled and about half claim it as fact. I believe it myself, but I guess it is just a matter of personal perspective, from reading between the lines. Given the raw nature of the average man, let alone slave owners, it is of no astounding wonder that slaves were taken advantage of.
Of course, there are those who believe he cut down a cherry tree and told his father the truth when questioned about it. They teach that in school and of course it is a myth.

And I am more inclined to believe the syphillis rumor than the cherry tree myth.

Of course you don't.
What were the symptoms? What were the records? What was the testimony? In other words, where are your facts?

If you don't have any, then there is not logic.

It's funny how you allowed for reasonable doubt for Casey Anthony but you don't for George Washington when there has been NO evidence provided.

You would find a way to argue around it if it were proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he died of syphillis.

You don't believe it...fine. I happen to think it is more than possible based on my knowledge of history and slaveowners. Oh, well.

Yeah, I looked it up, too. None of those people who made the syphilis claim had any "proof" other than they heard or read it somewhere (such as from another rumor mill.) Most of the sites, if they're honest, say that there is no proof, such as physical symptoms, or credible source.

That's what people say but I've never heard anyone teach that as history. I've always heard that the cherry tree story was a myth, even when I was a kid. I don't recall anyone actually believing that story.
