Audiologist Just Told Me I'm A Possible Candidate

Hey, first the good news! I'm a candidate. Date for the operation is in late January or early February.

Now the bad news. I gotta keep diabetes and blood pressure under control. Doc won't operate unless he's sure it's under control. Hey, I think my fingers are a worthy sacrifice for the cause. Gotta prick 'em for so I can make sure that blood sugar is under control.

Also, I won't know the results from my CT till tomorrow.

I was afraid I'd do too well on speech comprehension part. Boy was I wrong. This speech comprehension test involves me being able to understand spoken sentences without lipreading. I did well on the individual words part but I really bombed the sentence part. I hadn't expected to get ZERO comprehension on this test.

Congratulations!

I'm sure you are motivated enough to do what you gotta do to get the CI ;)

Ummm...that is interesting about how you did in the single word test vs the sentence tests. I was the other way around where I did much better on the sentence tests (due to contextual clues) than the single word test. I would have thought it that way for everybody...learn something new everyday.

Phew! That's great news. You weren't too sure if you were going to be a candidate as your audie had her reservations didn't she? Anyway I hope the CT scan looks okay and you get your date soon.

I'm like SR171Soars - I got 0% for single words but got more sentences because of the context. Interesting that you are the other way round!

PS thanks for my daughter's birthday wishes! She had a lovely day :)

Congratulations on your CI candidacy deafskeptic! :)

I had the same experience as sr171soars and R2D2. My sentence understanding was considerably better than my single word understanding. (20% vs. 0%).

Guess this proves that we all hear differently!

Just got word about my CT, and there were mastoid infections in the past but otherwise scan is fine. :) If I keep my diabetes under control, I'll have the operation in early Feb. I dunno about exact date though. I'm told my hook up will be 2 weeks after operation.

That's great deafskeptic! Keep us posted! 2007 will be a "Happy New Ear" for you! :)

Found out that my surgery is sheduled for Feb 20th - if I keep diabetes under control. Reading my meter is a bit depressing but I'll keep working at it and hopefully I'll have better control soon. :)

From your statements, I take it that you are controlling your diabetes with a diet?

I'm trying to control it with diet and meds. I should add exercise but I'm feeling too wimpy to go out in freezing weather.

Oh, I'll see a doctor about diabetes next week.

Yea, I hear you about the weather...a might bit nippy out there.

Best of success in getting yourself prepared for the big day in February! Make sure you listen to the doctor too! ;)

deafskeptic,

Let us know how your appointment goes next week -- and congratulations on the surgery date!! :)

My meter readings are starting to look encouraging. :) Goal is 140 or less and I got my lowest reading yet: 163 before breakfast. Let's see how well I handle 1 c. of pasta in two hours. Yes, I had pasta based breakfast. :P

Saw the doc for my diabetes today. Now that I'm on meds for blood pressure, I'm really pleased to say that I got normal bp readings in his office today.

I won't know what my HbA1c (a test that shows what my blood sugar was like for the past 2 months) is like till I see doc again next monday. However , my blood sugar is going down with my meds. Let's hope I get this under control for my CI surgery.

You'll make it. Be careful with the holidays coming up. Great time to get off track...

I'll try. One thing in my favor, I'm not the only diabetic in the family. I'm sure I should find it much easier to resist the temptations with her support this year.

I saw the doc earlier today and I'm seeing an Eye doctor ASAP because yesterday because I had flashing lights in my eyes just before and during my migraine headache. Although my doctor thinks it's just a symptom of of my migraine, I do want to make sure that my flashing lights aren't a sign of a serious eye disease as well. According to one site, 80% of all diabetes come down with diabetic retinopathy after having diabetes for many years. Wish me luck.

Those lights keep making me think that I'll become blind one day despite reassurances from others. I really hope that my doctor is right and that I don't have signs of eye disease. Just wanna make sure.

deafskeptic,

I'm not a doctor, but I do suffer from migraines and the flashing lights you're describing sound like they are the result of your migraine. The early onset of a migraine is called an "aura" and consists of one or more of the following symptoms: seeing flashing lights before the eyes, sensitivity to light and sound, dizziness and/or nausea/vomiting.

As long as you see your eye doctor on an annual basis and keep your blood sugars under control, you shouldn't have to worry about diabetic retinopathy -- although I completely understand your concern.

I'm glad you will be seeing a doctor to discuss your symptoms. It's always better to err on the side of caution. :)

Thanks for the information. I am aware you can also have auras without the headaches as well. I used to get a lot of migraines when I was younger and I rarely got the auras. This is my first migraine in many years and I had forgotten how much they hurt. When I get one of these headaches, I wonder if it's possible to die of a headache.

I think the doctor is very likely to be right but I do want to have my eyes examined just in case.

Thinking of you Deafskeptic and hope that it's nothing more serious than the migrane (as undesirable as they are...)
