I am currently enrolled in an ASL level 2 college course that requires reporting on some aspect/topic of the Deaf Community. The aspect/topic I have chosen is the history of legal issues in regards to the Deaf Community. I obviously want to address the legal issues as they pertain to the advancement of deaf rights, but also from the perspective of possible instances where individuals of the Deaf Community may have been victims of the legal system as the result of their deafness. For instance, perhaps individuals who were wrongly accused, those who may have received harsher punishments for crimes due to poor legal representation, etc.

I am not necessarily looking for personal stories, as I wouldn't want to intrude on anyone's privacy. However, if anyone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Just keep on going into reading and posting all the threads here. Please don't be serious. Have fun with us. See you around.

Thank you.

I did put a brief survey in the general chat thread. If anyone would be interested in answering the questions, that would be great.

Thanks again

Hello

Welcome, I'm also a 2nd year ASL student. I'm here for the same reasons you are, to find info for a presentation due at the end of the semester. Where do you attend school? I'm at MCC in Michigan. Just curious if we are in the same class or school, lol. Best of luck on your presentation! I am going to be making a post here soon - I would like to know more about why deaf children are put into the school they are, whether being public, mainstream, or deaf. What reasons you would do any particular one? Hope to hear from you soon.

i am also a student at mcc i will be retaking asl 5 due to unforseen circimstances. I want to meet people here and anywhere to communicate with people..

I do not know very much sign but I'm starting to pick it up! Kudos to you for learning it. I feel so horrible not knowing much sign and I'm deaf! I was never allowed to sign as a kid in school, was punished for it and forced to speak...I was taught the oral method.

Since you're in college and are learning about deaf culture you will hear about that method of teaching and a lot of other stuff too. If you have any questions feel free to ask anyone on this board. I'd love to help you out but I've not been a part of the deaf community for many years and I am just starting out trying to get my foot in the door.

I did learn about oralism in classes but I think I learned more when I went with a friend to a gathering. There were people there that had went to Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) when signing wasnt allowed.. My mom has a cousin who went there and he is my inspiration even though I have only met him once (he lives across the county). I know I got of the subject sorry I do that alot.

I have also learned about the oral method, but not to the extent that I am currently with the report I am researching for. Now when people comment about why deaf people feel they need their own culture, I think I have a much better understanding. I never realized before the persecution that deaf people have faced over the years. Thank goodness our culture has evolved and there are more and more hearing people who recognize the contributions that deaf people have to make to our society.

Not so many recognize. Nor evolved really.

Hello from Scotland

Hello, i hope you don't mind me joining your site. Im hearing, please don't throw me out. I am very Deaf aware ( unlike most of the people I meet ) I have some Deaf clients in the Tattoo studio I work in and started learning BSL to offer the same quality of service to all who visit. I've read through your site, loads of great posts, answered a few of my questions. Look forward to chatting with you. XX:wave::wave:
