To Malfoyish,

Can you tell me anything about sialography?

Sure. :)

Sialography is an X-ray picture of the salivary ducts and the related glandular structures. The salivary glands are 3 sets of glands on each side of the face that secrete saliva into the mouth.

The test is performed in a hospital radiology department, or in the health care provider's office by an X-ray technician. You may be given a sedative before the procedure. You will be asked to lie on your back on the X-ray table. An X-ray is taken before the contrast material is injected to ensure that no stones are present to stop the contrast material from entering the ducts. A catheter (a small flexible tube) will be inserted through your mouth and into the duct of the salivary gland. A contrast medium in then injected into the duct so that the duct will show up on the X-ray. X-rays will be taken from a number of positions. You may be given lemon juice by mouth to help stimulate the production of saliva. Pictures are repeated to examine the drainage of the saliva into the mouth.

You must sign a consent form. You will need to rinse your mouth with an antiseptic (germ-killing) solution before the procedure.

Hope this helps. ;)

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is rumored to be released in theaters in November 2005. :) Let's hope no one delays this any further because I am very, very, VERY anxious!

Malfoyish, can you talk to snakes?

Levonian,

Not really, although I did try last time we went to the zoo. There was a nice-lookin' python on the other side of the glass and I made all sorts of faces at it. He didn't respond. Maybe he was disappointed that I wasn't Harry Potter.

I suppose it would be easier to recite the Krebs Cycle than to converse with a snake, no? :)

if u got pregnant by rape and got pregnant... would u go for abortion? or keep it? or give the baby up? why? and why not?

Tough question. It really depends on the woman, I think. :) It is really not my place to say whether aborting a rape baby is "the right thing" or "not the right thing." The reason for this is of course, because women have done both - they have kept their babies, and others have aborted, and others have put the child up for adoption.

I guess that I, personally, would have the baby. Whether I keep it or not, I'd have to decide later on, after it was born. I'd have to see how I felt - see whether I could handle raising this child. It would be as much mine as it would the man's who assaulted me, so I would be very much attached to it after 9 months of carrying it. A lot of factors come into play, but I would not abort it, though - this would be a life created by a crime being committed, yes, but it would still not be the baby's fault. All babies deserve a chance at life, in my opinion...I would rather give the child up to a couple who cannot have babies instead of terminate it. I think it's a better alternative...

We are all different though, and rape is something that affects us differently. It doesn't mean that what you do to cope is "wrong," but rather that we may have a different outlook on how we want to deal with the violation on us. *hugs* Just wondering, was there a reason you asked that?

Well, if the snake isn't going to respond, it wouldn't be too hard. It's kinda like talking to a wall - or my kids. They don't listen too well either.

I’ve actually known people who can recite the entire Krebs Cycle. I can recite it too, if you’re satisfied with "one molecule of glucose yields 36 molecules of ATP, and everything in between is a complete mystery".

Hi Malfoyish

I found this board the other night and had to laugh at some of the posts. My questions for you:

What was school like for you?

Did you have HA or CI back then?

If you could change something about your school years, what would it be? Why?

I think that I will stop for now.

School, school...it wasn't pleasant, I'll tell ya that. I was in the mainstream program, and wore hearing aids. I did not receive my CI until I was 22 years old...

I had services available to me such as speech therapy and resource room, but all that seemed to do really was re-enforce to my peers that I was someone who needed a little extra help. I hated being known as the deaf girl. What can ya do, though? Hey, at least in HS, the resource room teacher used to give me 98's and 99's. Helped with poor grades in Chemistry. LOL!

If I could change anything about my school days, I'd have to say the people I made contact with. Some of them were insensitive clods, and I'd go home crying on a regular basis. I would have instilled more understanding into some of my peers, and perhaps changed my own perspective on them and their viewpoints.

Amazing what getting older does to a person, eh?

I've been in an terp training program for 10 years and was SHOCKED to hear that many Deaf only have 4th or 5th grade Math and English comprehension (understanding). For last two semesters in school, have helped tutor math class with only Deaf students.

If college students have problems with fractions, that is not good sign for them. Better for them to get extra help than to be so far behind. Also this doesn't make their teachers look good either. What do you think?

Well I know exactly what you mean. The biggest problem, IMO, with NYC schools is the crowded classrooms. My eight year old has special education needs, and the teacher is doing NOTHING for him in the classroom. I really think he would benefit from outside tutoring. He is not deaf, but I do believe that in mainstream classes as well, the deaf and learning disabled, for that matter, do not get the extra help that they need. That is what resource room is for. I'm all for it. It has helped me immensely.

i am good at basic math like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing... the heck with fractions! i need a frigging calculator to figure the fractions.. (scoffing) so that doesnt make me the girl who is behind in mathematics.. i know ppl who DETEST MATH and cant even do a simple math.. so i am happy with the way i am as far as my math skills go..

so how is your son doing in academics even though you feel the school system can do for him?? is he still behind or what?

I stink at Math. And, always have. I do Okay with very basic math, but anything higher than 4th grade math, and I'm lost. I have learning disabilities, though, so that's why.

I'm hearing, btw. :)

I agree completely. I have similiar issues as your son, except your son's needs became apparent more quickly than mine did at his age. I wasn't diagnosed as LD until I was in third grade. Even when I was identified as having a learning disabilty, I was'nt given the proper help in a resource room like some of my classmates were. If I had been, I probably wouldn't have struggled so much, and I probably wouldn't be struggling with some of the learning difficulties now so late in life.
