As more toddlers get cochlear implants, they face a strange new world

I have no experience being HOH. obviously, i was born Deaf and i ve already idenfity myself as Deaf girl. I am happy for who I am. Of course I am in a LARGE NUMBER of IGNORANT HEARING people who get more furious with me. Other than that I am cool. I have seen SOME HOH or Oralist who have been going through the difficult time to try to be fit into between with hearing world or Deaf world. Now with the new TOOLS, I am wondering what happen to small Kids with CI users when the CI users get older and what will their identify be alike? I always wonder about this one. wow.

I hope that my daughter will be equally comfortable in both worlds. She is becoming fluent in both languages so that she can communicate with everyone.

I hope that all deaf kids get that chance.

well, don't you forget that some CIs dont work for Deaf kids. It is a whole different story for those Deaf kids who dont use CI anymore or never had CI. .

How am I closed-minded? I have given my child ASL, access and membership in a wonderful, welcoming Deaf community, she attended a bi-bi school until SHE asked to more and our entire family learned ASL (to varying degrees) to communicate with her.

How close-minded of us! What a horrible world we would be in if every family made the choices we did!!!

You are closed minded because you act like every family has to follow your path.

I agree with Bottesini. Each family and child is completely different to yours. Whichever worked for you will may not work for them

I would describe you as a "concern troll," FJ. You generally only post in CI threads. I've never seen you in the other more sociable threads. You don't seem interested in the community here. That's fine but don't pretend like you're not one.

It's like she wants to be the best and praised by deaf people by how she is bringing up her daughter and is making others follow or she thinks they are totally wrong and dont care about their kids

I hope so too.

By the way I don't think faire_jour is closed mind, she still using sign language with her daughter likely to most hearing parents who don't even when sign language is the child's primary means of communication :)

Actually, I am one of a very small minority who believe in parental choice. I have friends who have chosen oral only and friends who are raising their children without amplification or any spoken language. I love them and their children equally.

I, personally, believe that every child with a hearing loss should be given ASL, but that isn't my decision.

I don't post in many other threads. I'm interested in what interests me, that's all. I stick around because too often threads like this turn into "bash hearing parents" , "they just don't get it", and that is crap. Just because someone comes to a different conclusion than you, or makes a different choice, doesn't make them wrong.

I'm the one who defends parents! I believe that every parent loves their child and wants what is best for them, but everyone has different opinions about how to help them become successful.

come on people. I know FJ is not well-liked in here but let's be objective in here. Granted - we live in hearing-dominated world. We deafies have experience hardship and unfairness associated with deafness in hearing world.

It is not wrong for one to WANT to hear - whatever their reason is. It is every parents' rights to decide on what they want for their child - no matter what their reason is. If FJ wants her child to be fluent in both worlds - spoken English and ASL... fine by me!

Most importantly - Kat (FJ's daughter - forgive me if I got her name wrong) knows ASL and can always go back to ASL if hearing world/spoken English doesn't work out for her later on.

:)

Why thank you, Jiro. (That is her name)

I am also well aware that I am not liked, and I assume it is because I won't back down. I think I make people think about things that make them unhappy, and make them see things from another perspective. People want to dismiss me because I'm hearing, and they don't like what I'm saying, but they can't because I am still doing the "right" things.

No, it is your attitude. That you know "right" and that we don't.

yes you're not well-liked in here because of your reasoning behind your decision for Kat. Oh well - everybody's got different reason for same action, right. Just don't beat on drum too loud to tell people that it is "right" for all deaf children. Long time ago when I was growing up, my parents got in argument with other parents with deaf children on "what's right way to raise deaf children." Simple - keep it to yourself.

As long as all deaf children have a complete solid access to ASL and deaf culture..... whatever you do beside that such as opting for CI/HA/SEE/Hearing World/etc... fine by me!

I don't have an agenda. I'm not pro or anti CI.

Jiro, I have supported FJ's decision to use ASL. If you look on some other threads, I have commented that I respect FJ for this decision and know that her daughter will benefit from it. Not many parents are willing to do that.

Must go, child having melt down!!!!
