no wonder - those are crappy laptops....

I am with Jiro in the first page of this thread.
However, miss Delectable - the Jb HiFi has various laptops for sale at reasonable prices, but then what the others said - stick with good names if you want long life. Dell is OK, monitors from DELL is fantastic (even I own one, sold one last monday FYI)

I currently own a Gateway NV58 Laptop with 512MB NVIDA Video/graphic card, 4GB ram, 640GB HDD, decent intergrated webcam and runs fantastic, no problems so far. Worth my $800 (RRP $1200 - I did the 'bitch please' mode to reduce the price)

So all dependable on what you want and budgeting. I also recommend a small 500GB Western Digital external HDD (You can buy from dicksmith for $99) if you want to keep the files and photos, just in case the laptop crashes out of the blue.

The more efficient, the less wasteful you are.

Thankfully, I never had the need to get more than two computers at a time. I lived with just one for years and I didn't have problems.

It's just a matter of getting your needs met which is important.

lol you have no idea....

while I agree that macs are built very tough they are expensive!
not everyone can afford to plunk down $1,200 or so for a laptop
the same could be said with a lot of cars
think about it a minute! how many people buy hummers?
unless you are in a rescue squad you really don't have a need for it
your smaller vehicle cost a lot less the insurance is a lot less and parts cost are also a lot less.
so why buy a hummer?

back to buying a laptop if color is what you want for a laptop
dell has far more (shell color) options for their laptops and net-books.
support wise you would be better off with an hp.
graphics and media production wise a mac is better.
as a tech Ive worked on all mac, pc,servers, desktops, and portables.
i can tell you chose your laptop more for what you will do with it than its color:D

back then - lot of people got hummers cuz of tax loophole and incentive. They closed it so that's why they chucked it away.

Probably dropped a laptop, never turned a laptop off for few weeks or install a too much software then blamed to Toshiba.

Well, the cheap ones... there is some truth to it. However, the cheap laptops/netbooks ($200, $300, etc) often die within a couple years from what I read. It's due to the tight space for the hard drive, video card, etc. They are more prone to failure. It's the same with laptops when compared to desktops.

They are getting better these days though.

laptop may not be popular anymore. :o

Yesterday, I read that the Best Buy CEO is claiming that the iPad sales are cannibalizing the laptop/netbook sales by as much as 50%.

Kind of a significant number if you ask me. The iPad is still selling like crazy these days. Millions sold per month. However, I would expect the laptop market to recover from that as they have to re-innovate it. That's just how it is.

Thursday night, just as a tornado -- or something like it -- was knocking down the trees that grow in our Brooklyn neighborhood, Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty issued a report to clients with a chart (copied above) graphing the damage done to the notebook PC market over the past eight or nine months. "Tablet cannibalization" -- chiefly by Apple's (AAPL) iPad -- is at least partially responsible, she suggests. Her evidence:

  • NPD data showing that after six months of decelerating growth, U.S. retail notebook unit growth fell 4% year over year in August, marking the first time those numbers had actually gone negative.
  • Similar data for the first week of September showing that units fell 4% year over year again.
  • BestBuy CEO Brian Dunn's widely repeated remarks in the Wall Street Journal that "internal estimates showed that the iPad had cannibalized sales from laptop PCs by as much as 50 percent."
Huberty concludes: "We expect tablets to continue to pressure PCs as more vendors launch products (e.g., Dell Streak and Samsung Tab) and Apple expands its iPad distribution."

Notebook sales growth goes negative. Can we blame the iPad yet? - Apple 2.0 - Fortune Tech

"Never turned off a laptop for a few weeks"....what do you mean by this. That people should turn off their computers on occasion?

laptop need to be off, give a break. It cannot handle on long-term heat during small board, unlike desktop.
