Another aircraft grounded after hitting bird
Another aircraft grounded after hitting bird - CNN.com

A bird struck an Arkansas hospital's helicopter Saturday, tearing a hole into the aircraft's nose and prompting the pilot to land early, according to officials and pictures taken after the landing.

The chopper's pilot made a "safe landing" in that state after hitting a bird while returning to Baptist Health Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, hospital spokesman Mark Lowman said.

"I think the pilot just made a judgment call to set it down," Lowman said of the landing, which happened at 6:15 p.m. Saturday near Forrest City, Arkansas.

Video footage taken by CNN affiliate WREG showed a bird hanging out of a hole torn into the paneling on the chopper's nose. Part of the helicopter's windshield also was broken.

The pilot was slightly injured during the landing, and the other two crew members on board were uninjured, Lowman said.

Federal aviation officials are investigating, and the helicopter is not expected to be grounded for long, he said.

The helicopter was returning from a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, where the crew had taken a patient.

The incident came two days after a US Airways jetliner was forced to land in New York's Hudson River, apparently after striking a flock of birds.

Shortly after the jet took off from New York's LaGuardia airport on Thursday, the crew reported seeing a flock of birds. Seconds later, the cockpit voice recorder captured the sounds of loud "thumps" and both of the plane's engines failed.

The pilot, C.B. "Sully" Sullenberger, landed the Airbus A320 in the Hudson, where all 155 people aboard were rescued.

that my hometown!!!!!!!!! but im lives in North Little Rock,Ar that city from Forrest City,Ar i saw on news makes me scary  since NYC plane got crash!

well there are many happens.. it says about avg 5,000 reports that kind of happen since maybe early 1970's... mostly were military reports..

that is life as birds are taking over the sky shrugs

we need to learn how to handle handful of birds by getting them out of way or something

Can't do that. You can't stop a plane going 130 mph when the birds come in front of the plane unexpectly.

in lab testing for engine.. they find that bird is winning! engine vs bird issue!!!

i saw on the tv news other time

yes exactly. MOST of time - it is very very minor damage. We do experience similar thing - driving. We get bug splatters and road-kills now and then. most of time - the damages are none to minor.... sometimes not if you hit a deer lol.

try 500+ mph but yes typically 130+ for taking off/landing.

It would nice to invent new technology with sound to scare birds off, better than hit on plane, ugh.

they already did... only for airport but what about for plane while in flight? the best they can do is use radar.

jiro, steel x yea i am talking about testing.. not speed lol!

jiro, yea about deer lol!

foxrac, yea that is what jiro say.. but the radar in the flight to catch any strange object such as bird, then it called sonar (i think it correct spelling.. is it?)

sonar is only for ocean. radar is for air. I think you meant echolocation (aka bat radar).

yea iknow but i saw the tv news.. i think it was.. that was they saying.. i remmy the word.. when they talks about it, then i puzzled.. it goes to submarine.. how it works at the air.. oh well..

yea. same principle. I do know commercial airliners are equipped with weather/vortex radar but I don't know if they're equipped with radar to detect flying objects.
