Analytic thinker

One thing is that I have never said anything how CIs are fake at all. My hubby has CI. so what seems to be problem about my thread to you?

I feel like, rather than sitting around complain about how much "hearing parents don't understand", the Deaf community needs to build bridges. Parents give their children CI's because they work! They see dozens of other deaf kids with them, at school, in playgroups, etc, and they see that they work, and they want the same benefit for their child. Most parents also read research and talk to professionals, and come to the conclusion that a CI is right for their family. There is nothing you can do about that, it's going to continue.

The change can happen in the next step. We need to show parent how ASL can benefit an implanted child. Don't tell them that all deaf children will fail without ASL, they know that isn't true. Don't say that CI's are fake and don't work, they see that they DO, with their own child. Parents need to be welcomed and to see that the Deaf community, and by extention, Deaf schools, are diverse and include people like their child.

Call them lazy, ignorant, unaccepting, "genocidal", or commiters of "hate crimes" and you are only hurting the deaf. You are ensuring that another deaf child goes without ASL and the Deaf community, and creating another mom like "cochlear implant online"

I know that but I dont know how that got into this thread and you said that I am a part of the problem. I dont encourage people to bash parents but if a deaf person doesnt like the idea of implanting children, are they wrong? I am lost to how that targeted the OP as she has never said anything like that.

I'm not saying you said these things, I'm saying that people say them. And I am commenting to the thread as a whole.

I feel like there are 2 options when it comes to childhood implantation:

1. Accept it, embrace parents and kids and encourage them to include ASL

or

2. Complain, call names, alienate parents, attempt to stop it and FAIL!

It's each individual's choice, but also, the community as a whole must decide.

The victimizing game is getting old.

Nice manipulative tactic, but it's one that gets old fast.

I am no victim. I know what I want for my child and we are very lucky that we have a local Deaf community that is welcoming and open. They are super supportive to all parents and their children.

My worry is for other parents, especially those with very young children. They are still in the "decision making" period and they need the infomation and support from the Deaf community, not name calling.

Agreed.

I didn't see the FF's post at start of this thread as an attempt to bash CIs. If I'm not mistaken, FF simply wanted to know the long terms results of early CI implantations.

That's what I said in bold. I was curious more about babies than children. Nothing else. Apparently, my thread is threatened to some certain people here. Well this is ALLDEAF, therefore i have rights to know about it.

It came to my thinking!

I understand lots of older people with good speaking who decide to get CIs and some of them may not be getting satisfied.

I suppose, if older people who happen to wake up one morning and their hearing come back to NORMAL without TOOLS.

Will people with returning hearing and people with CI users have the same level of hearing ?

The reason is that I asked, I have noticed that lots of parents seem to think that having CI is the best if babies (12 months old) to receive CI then they may have receiving of having better hearing and speaking as possible as they can fit into the hearing world.

Of course we don't have enough or solid evidence as proof yet, as of now that CI technologies are getting better, FINE. But wait till 2015 as they will be teenagers is something what I am curious about.

sorry if my logically thinking does not make sense to you. just educating me here as i want lot of hearing parents need to think hard about what to do with discovery of having DEAF babies.
If you really want to know I can get you contact information. But I doubt you want to talk to these people. If they got CI's 15-20 years ago, they were still very new, so only the strongest oral folks were doing it. www.cochlearimplantonline.com has lots of video interviews with CI users. You could look there.

I doubt you actually want the information, I see this as simply another thread to bash childhood implantation.

Who says that? I would not say anything so nasty about deaf babies' future.

That's what I thought. Thanks for clarifying..

I didnt like how it was implied that you doubted you really wanted information but to bash early childhood implantation.

That is why I spoke up...a deaf person has every right to inquire about childhood implantation and question it.

I understand if my orginal post was not clear but someone needs to check with me before they make some assumes about my post. =/
I am more interested in babies, not children. I am stunned how they start to implant early than 12 months old babies, not toddlers or children.

And Rockdrummer said it is tiresome that people bash parents at every single opportunity. I agree. If you aren't trying to fix the problem, you are part of it.

Here is exactly what I said

It also becomes tiresome when some people continue to insist that parents go the CI route because they are lazy or because they don't accept their child for who they are.

Sorry, I started writing and toward the end I realized it's kinda a rant...:giggle: I didn't know how strongly I felt about this.

I know many hearing parents that are terrified of having deaf children, they wouldn't know how to communicate with them and would be too lazy or selfish (in most cases) to even bother to learn or teach ASL to their child.

Therefore they will likely do everything they can to make sure their child can "fit into" the "hearing world" so they don't have to maybe break a nail doing something loving/sacrificial.

They are not willing to see the joys of perhaps a challenge but parents should love their child for how God created them and not change or give up because it might be a little difficult to learn a new language.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Then why bring up about being tired of getting bashed?
Read post #2 that is what I am referring to. No offense to double "F" either. :D

I think she knows what she is saying. And in a way, she does speak some truth to it -- parents do fear for their deaf children and what will become of them if they stay deaf.
she'll probably change her mind because she's hearing if it was own child.

But there are people who believe in little technology and medicine as possible and being natural as possible

Here is exactly what I said

I have said that I understand that and do see from your point of view on that issue but I still see the irrevelance of this to what was said to the OP with that assumption that her thread is another thread to bash CIs and that she is not really interested in getting information.

I did not mean to imply the thread was about bashing parents and I was only throwing in my 2 cents because of what I read in post #2. No offense meant to FF. :hmm:
