Veterinarians warn against doggie treat

Dog owners are being warned to think twice about giving their pets a popular treat designed to freshen a dog's breath.

According to veterinarians, at least 13 dogs have died after being fed the pet treat "Greenies."

Animal vets say the treats can become lodged in a dog's esophagus or intestine. And the treats don't break down.

The company that makes "Greenies" recommends owners buy the appropriate size treat for their dogs and to check that their dogs are chewing them properly.

The company says the number of complaints it's received is very low in relation to the numbers of treats it sells.

Could Dog Treats Be Deadly?

Owners and veterinarians that spoke to CNN have said at least 13 dogs have died after being fed the pet treat "Greenies."

The treat is designed to freshen a dog's breath and clean its teeth. However, some veterinarians say the treats can become lodged in a dog's esophagus or intestine. According to the vets CNN spoke to, the treats then don't break down.

The company that makes "greenies" recommends owners buy the appropriate size chew for their dogs and to check that their dogs chew the treats properly.

Most of the dog owners CNN talked to say they did follow package instructions and still had problems.

The company says the number of complaints it has received is very low in relation to the vast numbers of treats sold.

CNN also spoke with several vets who recommended Greenies.

I won't give Britney greenies, bones, and fish hooks....

Those are hard to digest.

Miss*Pinocchio,

I've never purchased them, but Snickers has received Greenies from one of the cooks at a previous university I attended. They are way too expensive for me to buy, even though the price is tax-deductable, because Snickers is my hearing dog.

Other items to avoid are rawhides (all of them), as they don't digest. When they do, you dog will poop for days. Ham bones...do we need to discuss this one? That is self-explanitory.

I give Snickers pigs ears and beef bones, not anything from the butcher, but those that are already packaged.

Good—no more Greenies for Pebbles or Fillmore! They’re way too damn expensive anyway. I cringe every time my wife comes home from PetSmart with a fresh bag. They’re like $16 for a fucking 2-lb. bag! I could buy boneless ribeye for that much. I’m sure there are other, less expensive chlorophyll based doggie treats that are just as effective as and far less expensive than Greenies.

How magnanimous of her. Miss P., ever the noble humanitarian, has agreed to stop feeding her dog fish hooks. :|

I have never given Oreo "Greenies" before, but I have heard bad stuff (like the choking hazard that is mentioned in this thread) about the treats....That;s why I don't buy them for her.

Rawhides....I think Oreo got sick after playing with one of those....she's not getting anymore rawhides for this reason...I want her to be happy and healthy. :)

I do buy Oreo toys like Nyabones (one of them she has is a blue dental chew). :) I think they are safer and more fun to chew for her. :)

lilo gets a nyhide bones and now that i have read abt the greenies im going to stop buying those we needed to get a fresh breath type of thing cuz maxi's got a breath of stale bird crap cuz shes killed a couple of birds by accident damn! but we do make sure dogs have good fresh breath!

Miss Pinocchio Can you post a picture and perphaps the company official website of what a fish hook looks like because I tried looking it up on the internet?????

Fish hooks, Miss P? I have never heard of it as food, but fish hooks to me is what you use for fishing to stick the bait on for the fish to try to get, then gets pulled up by the fisherman....

But I agree with the others, care to explain what this kind of fish hook you are talking about? I kept thinking of the little plastic or metal curve hooks that fish catches on...YIKES!!!
