accident in California

There's no plexiglass on these balconies. You can see that the big spaces have wire.
Uh-oh! It was turned upside down when it happened. That's how people fell off when it still had the front railing attached. Thanks to EoW.

Here's the close-up. Click to enlarge the picture above the picture.

They are blocked off with plywood. I saw a photo. I assume the doors to the other balconies in the other rooms are the same.

That is not good enough for me, the plywood can be removed . Some fool may want to open the door , the doors needs to be fixed so they can't be opened at all , made them into windows .

Wondering whether or not the city inspectors are responsible for it. They are the ones who passed the inspection.

City's and city building inspectors are immune from prosecution. Permits and inspections can help ensure that the building is built to code, but the inspectors don't inspect everything done on a building, there isn't enough time. On the balcony's they might of inspected one of them and signed off on the others when they were satisfied they were being done correctly. Another thing that many don't realize is that building permits are just another revenue stream for the city's and don't really ensure safety in buildings.

And how would you "fix" the doors? The plywood is screwed to the frame of the door around the perimeter of the door with screws being placed probably every 6"-8" and then it probably has 2x4 or even 2x6's adding reinforcement to the plywood. You would have to remove probably 40 to 60 screws before you could open the doors.

I would be willing to bet that the balcony's will be replaced(one below the one that fell has already been removed and the others have been red tagged) with windows after this tragedy since it will be cheaper to do than re-engineer the balcony's and make sure they would be structurally safe from now on.

I doubt they can do that for fire safety escape rules.

There are no stairs on the balconies , I guess people would have to wait for the fire truck to put their ladder up to get out . There could be a fire escape some place else in the building. Or are there stairs build on the balconies ?

Have you never seen firetrucks put ladders up to windows? Same difference.

We just spoke with our daughter who lives in Ireland. Her bosses daughter lives in this apartment building with her two best friends. She said he left immediately for San Francisco not knowing if she was one of the injured or dead. Apparently information to the families was difficult to obtain in the very beginning. He found his daughter and thankfully she was ok but two of her best friends were killed. My daughter is in shock that she is so close to this tragedy. Her and a number of classmates attended one of the many memorials today. I feel horrible for these families.

Oh, if they inspect a balcony and pass the inspection, all other balconies are automatically allowed to be built? Why did that balcony collapse while others don't?

Well, the victims' families will sue the building owner who will sue the city for failing to do its job that is paid by taxpayers.

so always going to be someone else fault,It turn full circle come down to tax payer for not paying more tax so city can fail to do its job and owner whinge life unfair and victims familes got years in front of them fighting for justice...NO WIN REALLY

That balcony collapsed because either it was the only one messed up or the others just haven't had that many people on it yet.

I belives someone posted about this happening in other states chicgo?? I having difficulty flipping pages back so not 100% sure..
If there room enough to take that many people on balcony then should be strong enough for it...The whole building and other buildings made of the same things in same way need urgent attention....
I expect like most things blame will go back and forth

First of all the city is immune from prosecution in any building inspection matters.

Second, the inspectors don't have the time or the man power to inspect everything in a building. They assume that if you did the first one right, you will do the others right also. Another problem is inspectors knowledge or lack there of, they might have a lot of knowledge of one aspect of construction and little or none of an another area of construction, so they pass something that shouldn't be passed.

Third, the other balcony's on the building probably have the same problem, but didn't have 13 people on them, so they still are standing or were until they were removed from the building last week.

The balcony would of been strong enough to support the number of people on the balcony if water had not been able to get to the support members and rot them. Dry rot is the cause of the failure. The balcony collapse in Chicago years ago was caused by poor construction and failure to follow building codes.

:shock:you got be kidding no man hours to do this and not qualified
