About this Deaf Culture thing...

Having lots of mirrors can be freaking me out sometimes. lol Sadly, I do need mirrors.

That's very expressive. Too bad I missed what Frisky liked.

No, I typed out one line and then took it out immediately. It was just a generic comment about what does banishing wrinkles have to do with values of deaf culture. But I am learning I must keep my mouth shut now. I can be in a happy mood today! :)

I thought I was being inventive and original when I recently stuck a spare car rearview mirror on my computer to see people approaching me from behind. But it seems that quite a few of you have also come up with the idea as well. Maybe we could copy the mods who would customize their scooters by sticking on loads of mirrors. The person with the most mirrors on their computer wins!!!:giggle:

The mirror I have is one that I bought in a Babies R Us store that one would use to see their child in the back seat while they (the parent, not the child :giggle:) were driving.

I resisted (was going to type IGNORE IGNORE IGNORE).

Clearing up wrinkles- application of secret deaf values- should be announced from the "roof tops". Helpful to Hearing society? Just checked the mirror no wrinkles-yet! Right- "young age" does have advantages.

If hearing people want to get rid of the wrinkles, learn ASL...will get to exercise more.

What a great coping skill. Rear view mirrors on your desk. I love it!

It really would help me, too, because I can get so involved in what I am doing that people sneak up on me all the time. They really think it is funny to watch me jump out of my skin.

How about multiplying that by 7 everyday as in my household (8 counting hubby) :giggle: btw, still trying to teach my kids to 'tap' me not POKE me. What is FB teaching the kids these days?! (poke.....poke back) Mirrors - great idea.

Interesting- ASL is an exercise re: wrinkle removal. Is any other language with this ability?
Pass on this important word to Oliver Sacks- no mention of wrinkle removal in his book: Seeing Voices-A Journey into the World of the Deaf. Just checked the index.

No, your resistance to deafness is manifested in your actually getting a cochlear implant. It has virtually nothing to do with your acceptance, but rather, your lack of acceptance.
Are you saying that anyone who gets a CI is resisting deafness, and is lacking acceptance of deafness?

Or are you saying this about drphil only?

Reality check. As for the "pseudo psychologizing" on my "alleged non acceptance" of my bilateral deafness. Consider when I joined Alldeaf.com-July/10 vs December 20, 2006-the actual date of deafness. The actual date of operation-Sunnybrook/Toronto- was July 12,2007.

So much for "computer screen diagnosis" to reality.

Don't I recall asking anyone in Alldeaf.com almost 4 years ago- anything to do with my deafness.

It does seem illogical that if someone was not accepting his deafness he would seek out a forum that is all about being deaf.

Being deaf is not the same experience for every individual.

What works for one person doesn't work for another.

Personally, it's not the CIs that I have issue with. It's the attitude. And the way that he has responded to the people here who have tried to reach out to him.

It's the constant insidious comments about d/Deaf who did not pursue the technology options. In a roundabout way, opting for a CI with that state of mind about other Deaf individuals is, in a way, not accepting one's deafness. So no, it's not the actions that is the issue: it's the rationale behind the actions.

I won't be commenting on this topic of drphil any further. I have a hard time dealing with someone who is not even coherent.

souggy: check your mirror- while looking.

The rational for joining this forum: ostensible persons-deaf/Deaf/Hearing Impaired/ others with interest in the situation. Having Cochlear Implants/Hearing Aid/using ASL/ BSL et al.

I easily fit- being Bilateral deaf-December 20, 2006 and using a Cochlear Implant.

I would no doubt have a complete breakdown with that many people sneaking up on me!

Actually, it isn't i llogical at all. It is not an unexpected or unusual reaction in the least.

My posts are quite clear. No one else has had difficulty understanding them.

However, as I have stated several times in this thread, it is not a thread about drphil. It is a thread examining why some deaf seem to feel the need to look down on those that are culturally Deaf and to be very vocal about their perceived superiority to those that are culturally Deaf. If one does not agree with the cultural view, one needs only to leave those threads alone. However, drphil seems to be insistent upon coming into any thread on culture for no other reason than to sarcastically question the existence of such. He spends an innordinate amount of time telling anyone who will still even read his posts that the accepted experts on the topic have no idea what they are talking about, and he continually insults members who support the cultural view. Frankly, it has nothing to do with CI. It has to do with his obsession over the date that he supposedly became deaf (repeated ad nauseum and despite the fact that he had worn HAs for 30 years prior to that, and his claims (again ad nauseum) that deafness is total silence and has nothing to do with cultural perspectives. Perhaps if you had taken time to go back and read the posts he has been making, it would be more clear to you what is transpiring between drphil and many, many members of this forum. But thanks for singling me out. Its great that you would think I am that important.

I know what you mean. That's a legitimate gripe. (I wish he'd learn to use the signature feature.)

But that's aside from making a judgment on CI users that if they get a CI it's because they are resisting deafness or don't accept being deaf. People get CI's for a variety of personal reasons. Some CI people here may be too intimidated by such statements to speak up.
