A question...is the Cochlear implant made for the hearing or for the deaf?

1) That is not an analogy.

2) you said...

That is vague. Also a strawman..

wrong, it IS an analogy different topic , same situation of medicalising, same offensive attack on people are a little bit different...looks find, can hear, not fat, not tall, not poor, just 'something not the same as rest of us' goes on in their heads...they talk about crazy imaginations...could be great writers...or could be gay...or could be emotionally stunted...but yet doctors are clueless so they thought electrocution in mild form will do the trick...its crazy!!
its like
looking at deaf people
oh they cant hear, but they need to be same as us, lets fix their ears...

and expect it to change...

its crazy!!...
i mean doctors only look at human bodies from some sort of 'perfect human beings' as a reference...some kinks there or here, is going have to be eradicated, to hell with consequences...after all, a myth that "doctors CAN cure" came from some sort of overgeneralisation, and society panics, and thus granted all the excess powers to doctors.

ever had a chance to read about well-ness as being a new trend which makes more people panic more over NOTHING but tiny little 'life hazards; like 'forgetfullness' , temper', erections, not in perfect feel good mood 24/7 but needs to be?
i mean these are UNREALISTIC, as we all know people have moods, we forget in stress, or just plan not interested, or just not that 'brainy' to start with, or not a sex god as porn might suggest Everyone ****s like this...etc etc media does a good job of frightening people with really weird expectations and all

aslo a huge proportion of disabled or deaf themed films/media makes it out that deafness have to be overcome...over what? cant deaf people just be? we get tired too you know, we have wants and needs too you know, we have a capacity to discuss what we plan to do, say camping or to do up a house, and do you really need to HEAR and Speak to do that?!

i dont think so

CPS: *knock the door*
Foxrac: Hello
CPS: I'm Children Protective Services. I received a complaint about your child fail to meet the requirement.
Foxrac: What kind of requirement?
CPS: Your child doesn't learn the oral language.
Foxrac: My child is deaf so he only fluent in ASL.
CPS: Oh really, that's okay.
Foxrac: We are deaf family.
CPS: Ok, Do you have any questions?
Foxrac: Who filed the complaint?
CPS: Your friend TXGolfer
Foxrac: O RLY? He should love to mess with me.
CPS: Sure, that's waste of taxpayers. *ugh*

 You don't have to worry about that.

 whatever.

it is not "whatever" to me. this issue is very real and deaf kids are still being impacted by this. we know because we were them once 20 years ago. you never went through it. how fortunate for you.

I'm not really interested in what you think. 200+ posts and both of you are clueless? not my problem. not my fault.

follow your own advice.. listen before you answer.

Yet...

I would like to ask some of you for your thoughts on the intention of this invention - the cochlear implant.

If you wanted to have a conversation you should have been more specific. You weren't. So....moving on.

Alexander Graham Bell method, hello? spanked on hands for using ASL? being prohibited from using ASL? forced to speak/hear? receive punishment for not getting it right? forced to wear CI when we don't want it (this was recent in Seattle)?

What about it?

Post #214. did you not see the link in my previous post?

what? what's the matter? well you ain't weaseling your way out of this.

your post
I don't think we have a right to tell parents how to raise their kids. Especially when medical professionals, some insurance cos and the FDA approve of the procedure.

my post (and my question for you)
so that means you would do nothing and say same thing to a controversial method 20 years ago that was medically and professionally accepted?

my post (and my question for you)

That is just repeating the same vague question. If you are not willing to rephrase your question with context it is probably best to just move on and stop wasting space.

Alexander Graham Bell: A legend in the history of deafness « Cochlear Implant Online
In the late 1890′s, Bell’s relationship with Gallaudet deteriorated due to their differing viewpoints on deaf education. Bell did not like Gallaudet’s idea, which was to teach deaf children sign language, send them to residential schools, and be taught by deaf teachers. He felt that this idea was isolating the deaf children from mainstream society. He wanted deaf children to learn how to be part of mainstream society. He basically wanted to give all of them the opportunity to be PART of the “hearing circle.”

these methods were medically and professionally accepted that were believed to be in the best interest of deaf children to be able to hear and talk. because of that... parents agreed and proceeded ahead with the said methods. in modern time, these methods are obviously considered archaic, barbaric, cruel, unproductive, and ineffective.

and yet.... you still say you don't THINK we have a right to tell parents how to raise their DEAF kids? simply because medical professionals said it's fine?

I didnt realize this thread was about deaf children either from the original post. Maybe I need to reread also. I thought it was asking is ci for deaf people's benefit or hearing people's benefit. When it comes to children, most deaf adults who were deaf as children are very against parents making the choice for the child. I would probably not do a ci on a child of my own if they were deaf because I have met so many deaf adults who are against it and have a better perspective of what it is to be a deaf child than I do. I started losing my hearing at age 25, so I have no perspective on what it would be like to be a deaf child.
