In the future, not only could your driving record and accident rate affect your insurance costs, but other motorists, cyclists, and even pedestrians armed with smart-phones could as well.
A new mobile application, called DriveMeCrazy lets normal citizens and motorists issue 'virtual tickets' through a simple smart-phone application to report driver behavior they deem risky or unsafe. While this may just seem like a short-lived mobile phone fad, this is actually quite a development, because in addition to being added to their database, the 'virtual tickets' could be forwarded to the NJ MVC and your insurance company. In addition to the reported 'violation', the time, date and location of such 'violation' could also be sent to both the DMV and your insurance company.
While the company claims it's developing algorithms and techniques to filter out erroneous data and reports, virtually anyone with a smart-phone can report a motorist and trigger a flag to be sent to the DMV and insurance company. The website also has less developed (and used) features, such as reporting a safe motorist, or 'flirting' with another driver who has registered a profile on their site
It has yet to be seen how much weight the virtual tickets and forwarded data will have with the MVC of NJ and insurance companies, but it's still something to keep in mind the next time you cut someone off who's yielding the latest BlackBerry or iPhone.
