There are many native ASL users on the show (particularly 4 of the main characters - Daphne, Emmett, Melody and Travis as well as the majority of students at Carlton). The rest of the characters who sign are learning ASL slowly as the show goes on - in the show they are hearing family members...

Regina can no longer sign so she had to talk but you couldn't hear her speak. The entire episode (apart from the very beginning and the last line) was silent except for some bits of instrumental music now and again.

Interesting. My deaf girlfriend's kids (when they were younger) always spoke with the 'accent' around their parents and other deaf adults but not when they were with hearing people only.

I read that Dr. G-L Pinder has been deaf for the past 12 years but graduated as a speech language pathologist in 1972. I think this is a key bit of information when discussing the topic of the possibilities of a 'deaf speech therapist'.
