Can Loud Noises Still Make Your Ears Hurt If You Can't Hear Them?

Yes. I can't hear fireworks at all on my right side - but it's painful when they go off due to the concussion.

Teen Selective Mute Looking For Friends

No Problem. Your answer actually provided the reason they might favour the term mute :) For others reading this (merely as a matter of clarification) Nonverbal is usually part of a spectrum of other developmental issues. Non-speaking is merely a colloquialism of nonverbal with the same...

Teen Selective Mute Looking For Friends

It's not archaic at all. What other term would you use for someone who is completely unable to speak or produce sound (regardless of reason). Mute means silent, and has no negative connotations to it (unlike the term "dumb" which *did* mean mute and *is* now offensive).

Hello, New Member Here With A Question About The Site

Most of us (who would want such a thing), just use a mirror, or position ourselves in such a way that we can see. and the "Deafie sense" ... it's a real thing - most of us don't really need anything "extra". That, and all the false triggers in a business/office environment would be more of a...

    I Am Going Deaf!?

I Have APD as well as being Hoh/ Deaf. APD is a neurological condition which effects how the brain is able to hear, process and understand sounds. While it certainly does mean that we have difficulty (read: impossibility) sorting sounds in loud environments, it's much, more complicated that...

My 3 And Half Yr Old Is Now Arguing About What Sign Is Right!

It sounds just like what hearing kids do with spoken language. It's a linguistic developmental stage in which they start playing with and manipulating language in order to better understand it's rules. It's not a bad thing - it's just normal. Don't make a big deal out of it (it's like if a...

    Rhinoplasty For Partial Deaferers

I don't see how the two are connected? Did the accident cause any damage that would pose contraindications for any nasal/sinus procedures? Have you had an ENT consult to rule out any structural changes/issues the accident may have caused (of course this would be dependent on the nature of the...

What Are Jobs Deaf People Can't Do?

**sigh** The use of a metronome is a *teaching tool* for those learning how to tune a piano so they can learn what various temperament sounds like. They LISTEN to the beats between various intervals and then use the metronome to help them count how many beats happen in a minute. It's like...

What Are Jobs Deaf People Can't Do?

No Pianos can't be tuned with a metronome. I metronome is a device which measures time not pitch. For that matter a piano can't be correctly tuned with a electronic tuner either because pianos are "tempered" which means that each note is tuned uniquely (not exactly "in tune") so that it blends...

what about a dymo label with the numbers and put that on the card itself? (if that would be large enough ?) Just don't put the dymo label near the electronic swipe strip or it will come off/make the card not read in machines

    ASL interpreting with HOH?

I'd suggest that for any medical or legal type appointments that even if your husband is in the room - you hire/request an interpreter. For legal reasons this is very important. Is your husband a registered interpreter? (and does he carry the appropriate liability insurance to be...

    ASL interpreting with HOH?

In university, I'd often request that the interpreters, interpreted for the prof, students etc, but that I would voice for myself. There's a few times I'd sign to my 'terps that I wanted to express something in ASL and have them voice for me. You just need to set up whatever is most...

    Deaf piano ?

Basic tuning can be done with a tuner - but pianos also have to be "tempered" ... which isn't something you can do with a tuner. It takes a trained ear.

    Deaf piano ?

More precisely, you can buy an inexpensive chromatic tuner to monitor the tuning of an acoustic (versus electronic) piano. The actual tuning of an acoustic piano is *not* and "at home, anyone can do it, job". You'd have to call in a professional piano tuner to tune it. (typically every 6-12...

    Deaf piano ?

There's no reason why you can't. Piano/Organ/Harpsichord etc are mostly muscle memory instruments (you don't have the hear the pitches the play)
