Why owning a home is better than renting

This is why renting is an attractive option; It allows people to move about freely. What if this person found a job 200 miles away? The homeowner would have to move, and still maintain the mortgage on the home until it sells. The renter just simply moves. ;) Don't underestimate freedom of...

Gas is going to be 4 a gal this summer

That's a pretty astute comment. However, $4 gas is peanuts compared to what will happen if 'Peak Oil' is upon the world. U.S. needs to explore energy alternatives now to reduce our reliance on foreign oil and more on our self-sufficiency. If $4 gas gives the economy a needed incentive to explore...

    Rinko Kikuchi in Babel

I could be off base on this one; I wonder if the character's nudity had to play with the producer's decision in casting (or more specificially, defaulting) a hearing woman to play that role in Babel? I remember watching a short video segment on the PBS's Through Deaf Eyes documentary, where...

Why owning a home is better than renting

If it weren't for the recent run-up in housing prices, I would tend to agree with much of what you say. That's true. Keep in mind that rents are controlled by market forces. Rents can only go up as to how much the market can willingly bear. If the market demands $1,000/mo. rents, then that's...

Condo has maintenance fee and tax propery

Believe me, had you purchased a condo, especially in the past five years of the run-up in prices, you would have 'thrown' away your money in paying off the interest, taxes, insurance, and if applicable, HOA fees. Unless you lucked out and sold your place at the top of the market. Renters...

Anyone knows how to do Cold Fusion??

First of all, I don't know ColdFusion. Secondly, it's better to have the ColdFusion add-on option at GoDaddy for $1.99 a month extra. (I think) If you're with another web-hosting provider, then obviously YMMV as far as ColdFusion is concerned. Why purchase standalone ColdFusion software...

    Identity Politics Gone Wild

Stumbled upon this article recently at DeafRead; Identity Politics Gone Wild - (Weekly Standard) The article truly delves into the minutae of Deaf Culture, to the point where it is disturbing on so many levels. Anyway, discuss amongst yourselves. :) Me? I'm already looking to the...

    You never know

That is true! This is one reason why I love to go to Deaf gatherings such as the DeafNation Expo. You never know who you will meet, and when you do meet another AD'er, it is a geniune delight in meeting them.

    My experience at DeafNation Expo:

It was nice meeting you at the Deaf Expo. You actually look like your avatar! Like you, I had a nice time at the Expo and the City Walk social.

Who have you met or would like to on AD?

I recently attended the Orlando DeafNation Expo and had a great time. I also met a fellow AD'er by the name of Southern. Quite surprisingly, he does look like his avatar, a rarity nowadays! IslandGal also was at the Expo, and was truly a pleasure to meet again.

    index.php vs index.html

Haven't you all heard of AJAX? You already noticed Ajax in action, whenever you do a 'quick reply' or edit a posting you made earlier. Ajax and other similiar technologies are now shoring up Web 2.0 and Internet website usability should improve thousandfold.

    Currency Trading

I recently found out about the 'Yen Carry Trade' phenomenon that is currently a *major* force in the worldwide financial markets. Thanks to the differing interest rate and currency spreads between countries, this yen carry trade can prove to be extremely lucrative. (Or ruinous!) I was...

    Rinko Kikuchi in Babel

Now, that's an astute observation, and sadly symptomatic of what ails localized Deaf concerns. Sure, Gallaudet and other programs having a critical mass of Deaf people will continue to garner their share of the public's attention... But the daily struggles of countless community Deaf service...

    Breaking the Code

For those who know ASL, please visit this ASL vlog by Carl: ASL Essentialism He talks about Cued English, dismissing it as not a real communications method. Given his propensity for disallowing translations of his ASL vlogs, I will not translate his vlog.

    Best Deaf School?

Wise move, there! FSD is somewhat a reasonably good school with a good slate of educational and extracurricular offerings. It isn't a 'top' school like MdSD, but is still very decent, nonetheless. Last I've heard, FSD offer AP classes in H.S., via partnering with other H.S. in the area! The...
