    A Question of Terminology

The OP didn't say anything about ASL users. The question was about people who can't speak (people who aren't necessarily deaf/hh.) I agree that people who choose not to speak while signing are best referred to with the phrase "voice off" but I don't think that's what's being asked about.

    hi & welcome ;)

Hey Courtney, If you never learn ASL, that does not make you a "fake deaf" person. (I'm a big fan of ASL, I think it's a great idea for people to learn, deaf, hearing, etc. But not knowing it doesn't make you a fake.)

Potentially big snowstorm to hit Chicago next week

To the weather pervs: Geeze, guys, I can see giving Mark some flak for patting himself on the back too hard like he was doing (I think more before that little break), or the onslaught of posts, stuff like that. But if he's genuinely not getting a joke, and you keep swatting it back and forth...

What are you doing right now?

That can be a dangerous question. I try never to ask anyone that. I think your cheese preferences are completely reasonable.

    So lonely..

Eh. Being able to do things the way I want to is worth alot to me. Also the fact that it's free. And you can do alot to protect yourself: use their relay system so you never give your email to a stranger, meet in a public place, and pay attention to what they write. If they don't seem to know...

    So lonely..

??? Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, not sure. But I don't think that's true. I know people who know ASL well and also talk well enough to be understood, and I've met others who don't sign and also don't speak clearly.

    So lonely..

True. And while you can try to start one, you have to pay a monthly fee to do it. Also, I had some bad experiences with the people there. (Not the people trying to meetup, but the people who run/work for meetup itself.) If I'm going to try to meet people, I like doing it in a way that lets me...

    So lonely..

Hey Liriope, I'm sorry you feel lonely! :( I have a couple thoughts. The first addresses something you mentioned in another post - not having anyone to practice asl with. Could you put some local ads around? Is there an area at school with a bulletin board? Or maybe your local Craigslist? If...

    deaf/hearing couples' experiences?

Hi Ema, Nothing replaces a class with a good teacher, but if you can't do that right now, I'd go to • ASL • American Sign Language - I wouldn't try to learn ASL from books in the earlier stages. (Later when you want to go deeper into the linguistic aspects, books are great.) For now I'd start...
