23andme health result did NOT show any variants for Hearing Loss, I'm Deaf. Possible Causes?

There are thousands of mutations that can cause hearing loss. An MRI won’t tell you if your brain it working correctly. 23&mre states specifically that they are NOT a diagnostic service. Around 120 genes are tested for by this company...

Interpreter question (position relative to speaker)?

I’m not the interpreter. I’m the Deaf person.

23andme health result did NOT show any variants for Hearing Loss, I'm Deaf. Possible Causes?

They don’t test every possible mutation and for hearing loss there are thousands of possible mutations.

Interpreter question (position relative to speaker)?

I have a question for the interpreters out there. How do you decide where to stand when interpreting? I recently went to an event with a very animated speaker who was in the middle of the stage but the interpreters were on the very edge of the stage. I felt like I was going to break my neck...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

The funny thing is that I use a cochlear implant (it shouk be visble in my signature). Some people on here used to say that me wanting a CI meant I was never and never will be Feaf despite using ASL my whole life. I apologize that my words made you feel less than. That is a crappy feeling. I...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

What exactly is your hearing loss history? If I recall correctly you have conductive hearing loss which is MUCH different from SNHL because there is rarely a distortion component.

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

You literterally restated my analogy. I didn’t say it was perfect but without glasses my vision is less than 20/300 and it isn’t perfect with glasses. I hesitated using the visual impairment because correcting vision is much different than attempting to correct hearing loss. I’ve also had IEPs...

    Cigna and cochlear implants

I have insurance through the marketplace since my employer doesn’t provide insurance. It has been 9 years since I, a person with a master’s degree, have had a job with any benefits.

    Cigna and cochlear implants

I could but I’m hoping to start medical school soon. A CROS hearing aid simply won’t be enough and my audiologist and the one I had before both agree that having bilateral CIs would be best for me. My surgeon also agrees that since I’ve done so well with one CI, I will donjust as well with a...

When do you decide that you aren't getting enough benefit from hearing aids?

For people reading this who wonder if I wished I had gotten a cochlear implant much earlier (I was implanted when I was 27 but turned 28 right before it was activated). The answer is a resounding YES! I wish I had gotten an evaluation when I was 20 and had severe to profound hearing loss EXCEPT...

    Cigna and cochlear implants

Hey everybody, I got my first cochlear implant 4 years ago with my graduate school insurance (which was amazing and covered all of the surgery and equipment except a $100 fee. I was truly lucky). Now we in the states have a new president and things have changed. Has anybody had luck with Cigna...

    Counting Down the Days

First time with earnolds? I forget that many/most people can use RIC hearing aids. If you have a hole next to the one that the tube enters, you should be good. My earmold fills my entire outer ear with no ventilation, so my ear gets sweaty and uncomfortable. I don’t use my hearing aid much...

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

Well, here is another analogy. Without my glasses, I am legally blind. With my glasses my vision is 20/30 to 20/45. I’d never identify myself as blind or visually impaired because I can see and function in a way that is nearly identical to people with normal vision (except at night).

Can HOH genuinely identify as Deaf?

There are many definitions of “d/Deafness” cultural or audiological and other. “Faking” or exaggerating hearing loss annoys the crap out of me. This is just my opinion, but if a person has mild to moderate hearing loss, it is just weird for them to identify as Deaf unless they come from Deaf...

    Earmold color selection

Yes, you need to tell your audiologist and PCP or ENT. This is like asking if you should tell a doctor that you accidentally cut off a finger.

    Deaf and swimming?

I love swimming and when doing laps I have no need to hear or see (without glasses I’m legally blind but I’d never claim to be “Blind” just as when I had hard of hearing, I never claimed to be “Deaf”). It is just me and the water. If I’m sharing lanes with someone, I let them know early that I’m...

    "You might know someone deaf..."

Pretty good article. I tend to be less defensive when hearing people assume things that they simply have t encountered but in much more angry she. People hearing or hard of hearing say “omg, I totally know what it’s like to be Deaf”. I assure you that if headphones and delephones work for you...
